Scooby do a diesel boxer engine , sadly they appear to snap the crank at 100k with alarming regularity!
These Scooby threads are right up there with Brexit, people seem to have strong opposing positions! Thing is love them or loathe them you could always unbolt it all and return it to OG same as lowering
You’ve spoilt it but a darn good alternative to me just posting ‘SHUT UP & LETS GO GET MASHED IN A FIELD’...
Both correct & is what it’s all about for us, maybe not for others but going on adventures meeting old & new friends is what it’s all about for us
does it REALLY matter whether a bus is air cooled or scooby converted? Those scooby conversions look right in the back of a bay, so does an air cooled motor, personal preference and all that! What I cannot understand is why a simple question was asked by grub and all hell breaks loose Respect for one another’s choices
I love tinkering with engines, and like most people are well capable reading a haynes manual and pretending to be a mechanic My issue is the original engine, to quote my old man who used to drive my van in the 1970's on quieter roads, "couldn't pull a stick out of a pigs arse". I didn't like getting stuck in the fast lane on dual carriageways because I'd let some truck out off the slip road and I couldn't get past his 60mph progress whilst being flashed by BMW drivers etc. I didn't like taking 4 hours to make a 2.5hr journey by car, and getting less than 20mpg in the process, being stuck on hills, stuck in the slow lane with foreign trucks tailgating me etc etc. So, as asked many times....how much would an air cooled engine be that could give me 140bhp reliably be to build? And would replacing my 1.6 with said engine with all its aftermatket new parts not devalue a....cough....classic? I was quoted £5k to have one with less power built up with quality parts. Alternatively I can and did inspect the donor Subaru car and all its service history and have that installed. Same as the inspection I did on the spare engine and loom I bought for £130 from a 2000 plate 54k auto a couple of years ago? The scooby engines come from world cars, that are plentiful in the US, Aus, Asia and Europe in at least three different models Imprezza, Legacy and Forrester. You can still buy the parts from main dealer parts counter. In the 8 years since mine has been converted I've changed the oil and plugs. The only fault it's had was an earth issue where the powder coat on the alternator stopped it charging (as a stop gap I bought two spare alternators from a specialist breaker in Burton for a whole £8 each). It's never once failed to start in the button, I'm 100% confident I could drive the length of the country having just checked the oil and giving it a quick once over visual. I've heard of one person that's had issues with a quad cam engine. Past that, those of us running Boggo EJ20 engines seem to be universally delighted....which I think is what ires some people so much.
Although I'm air cooled, my bus has other modifications. Therefore who am I to suggest other people's modifications are wrong Eg Scooby. If you are 100% original in every way then you can take the Mickey out of stroker or Scooby engines...or non standard wheels or lowering or those who have replaced the 1970s air in their tyres with modern polluted air
Thank you for finally getting back on topic. Less of the bitching, more of the helping. That's what this place is all about after all!
Has anyone tried to sell their bus with a Subaru engine in it? I just wondered if this would be a negative issue, or whether a potential new owner (new to VW buses as well) might see this as a positive. I suspect no one can answer that as most who have had done the conversion are long term owners. Other than that I enjoyed the read of comments @monkeyvanwestybike haven't you sold yours yet.
