So, I got the rear brakes back together and adjusted.
Come to adjust the handbrake and I can't get it any slacker than being on a 2 clicks.
New shoes and cylinders, handbrake cables no more than 5 years old.
Wheels turn freely when handbrake off with slack in cables.

The handbrake itself won’t go fully home?

No it goes home fine, and I've had drums off to check all connections....the handbrake just comes on quite quickly...may be different when I get it off the axle stands.

Just got her back on all 4 wheels and it certainly isn't on a 2 clicks...more like 4 now ..... how strange!

  5. If it's not on at all when handle in and on fully at two I'd say happy days, hillstarts easier when handle not in way of gearstick

  6. Was the rear end of the handbrake conduit(s) getting distorted by the axle stands?

No, stands on chassis member ... nothing near.
Will give her a run tomorrow and see how she goes.

  8. Wait a week it will loosen up a few clicks...,,,6 to seven is the correct clicks

Whatever holds on a steep hill and still lets you hit first gear is good.
The brake linings you have are probably very grippy with less metal in them than the usual.
In return they will probably wear faster, and maybe be a bit 'fun' as you hit the brakes hard and rear wheels lock as the nose dips. But who knows .. could be worth securing all loose junk, getting up to 35 mph on a wide empty road then standing on the brake and see what happens... If the brakes are all proportioned correctly it will stop straight without locking a wheel.

Did you use the horse shoe clips on the shoes and lever, if so make sure they are properly crimped, when I did mine one came lose and wrecked the shoe and the drum. Won't make any difference to your handbrake though.

Was speaking to my local friendly mechanic and mentioned the handbrake scenario....oh yes, he said, if you've got the wheels off the ground, the suspension arms droop down and make the cables tighter, once back down on the wheels, the cables will have slack ... obvious when you think about it.... senior moment.
