From my '79 bay. This is a the original VW that was fitted to my bus in the factory. The case has never been split and it has never had the heads off. I have driven it from 47,000 to 177,000 miles and it is tired. The oil has been changed every 3,000 miles/annually. There is minimal endfloat and it weeps a drop of oil from the pushrod tubes and the fuel pump but it will make an excellent base for anyone wanting to build themselves a new motor. I toyed with the idea of a 1776, but decided it would be too revvy, I investigated a low pressure turbo-charged 1600 for big torque, And spent a lot of time researching a twin carbed engine stock in all but crank throw, this would have produced stump pulling monstrous quantities of torque. However, I'm also big on reliability, the stock brakes are only just up to the job, it's not the best handling vehicle in the world and I would have driven it like a knob, so I've gone for a top quality, brand new, balanced 1584! Dull, but I'll still be running on this engine into my dotage.
The engine is now out and stripped. Compressions were down at 70, 95, 60 & 95, but endfloat remains well within tolerance. All cash offers welcomed, but I'm not interested in a swap for an Xbox etc.
No idea who bought it, but a couple of blokes turned up today at the time they promised, paid cash and took it away. Top buyer, would deal with again.
