Solex Carb Balance pipe type 4

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Daithi, Apr 18, 2018.

  1. Can anyone tell me the measurements for the balance pipe that goes from the carb manifolds on a type 4 with twin solex? Mine has been hacked at at some stage and I want to get a mate to make me up a new one. Much appreciated if you can, cheers.

  2. Any good ?

  3. I'm not sure is that the same one (or I'm just confused as usual), should be the one in yellow here?

  4. That's the servo take off.(brake booster) Would act as a balance pipe that's true but this is its function. you could use flexi for the whole thing and do away with the elbows onto the manifolds in truth. Whats up with yours?

I've got one in powder coated chrome that I might be persuaded to part with.

  7. I definitely think I'm confused now. Mine just doesn't seem to fit right, it doesn't reach the elbows on the manifolds and I have to use longer flexi to join them which keeps cracking as it moves too much under use, which is leading to hissing air, poor running etc. So when guides to setting up the solex ptsid carbs talk about the balance pipe which one are they actually talking about? I had thought it was that one.

It's the one in yellow on the diagram that I have.

  9. if that pipe leaked badly your brake peddle would go very hard ie brakes would be poor!

The other one is the central idling circuit which distributes fuel when at idle to both manifolds from what is effectively a small carburettor incorporated into your left hand carb. As a rule if it leaks, stop it leaking and move on from there!

  10. Should reach ok ours has connectors like in the picture coming off the manifold and fits spot on

..only if it's got a servo.. We have the balance pipe blocked off at the servo feed

  11. That's a handy photo Deefer, yeh we have the pipe blocked off at the servo feed too. So where is your pipe fed across? do you have it tied to the firewall/ back tin ? And does it go above or below the throttle cable?

  12. See photos below.. dirty engine photo shows where us should go ...clean engine phot shows where it ends up when some idiot who didn't realise until I've just looked at these photos that the manifolds are on the wrong side so port is too far forward...
So yeah "should" be fixed by a p clip to firewall.. and mine runs under cable in wrong place until manifolds come off next time![IMG][IMG]
