Somerset newbies

  1. We now have our new family member sat on the drive. We bought her in October but not been able to use her. Meet Olive our 1974 bay. She is very beautiful. My dear husband now has to dig deep into the grey matter as she’s got a tick over problem and he hasn’t maintained cars for a very long time. Any hints from the more experienced would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Welcome Sue! Post more info about the tickover issues and several of the gurus on here will suggest what to do. And then @snotty will tell you to throw something over the fence.

Is it ticking over too slow so the engine dies? Could be one of several things.

  3. Where in Somerset are you? Nice bus by the way...

  4. It’s running slow so the engine dies. Very challenging at junctions. His nibs has adjusted the tick over but can’t get it as he wants it. It’s looking like the automatic choke or carburettor needs a clean.

  5. Automatic choke can be adjusted by slackening screws and rotating. Is the choke butterfly fully vertical when fully warmed up?

An air leak can also cause the dying at junctions issue. First up, check nothing on the carb is loose, then check vacuum hoses. They should be tightly on and a quick suck on the end will confirm that they are not porous.

  7. Thank you. That’s really helpful. He’s going to have a look later.

We are in Yeovil. Where in Dorset are you?

  8. Milton Abbas, Near Blandford. But I teach in Sherborne.

  9. Just up the road then. We are finding our feet and will probably join a local club and attend a couple of events to get stuck in and mix with those who know

  10. There's a few Somerset people on here too so help is not far away!

A bit more info would help.
What carb have you got? What engine?
I’d imagine you’ve just screwed the throttle stop adjuster in to adjust the idle, which isn’t how you do it properly.

Hello and welcome from down in the New Forest. Nice looking bus!
I’ll be no help at all when it comes to engine adjustment stuff, but I would heartily recommend joining us at Techenders at the end of the month. There’s a provisional thread about it at the moment that you might have seen, but the proper ‘who’s coming’ will be up soon. It’s well worth the drive to Lutterworth.... a good chance to chat to folks who know and can help, plus extremely social

    Hi from Cheshire, welcome along,
Put pictures of the engine bay up so we can see what carb etc, and possibly spot what's wrong!
And start a new thread in Mech&Tech so more people will respond.
