Split charger woes.

    Hello

    After a lot of battery use my bus didn’t start after camping at volksworld. It was apparent that my split charger hadn’t been working so I’ve now had a good look. But I’ve lost the wiring diagram.

    The relay is open when the ignition/engine is off and as a result there is no power coming from my leisure battery. Hence my flat main battery. When the engine is running the relay shuts and I get power from my leisure battery. This is the wrong way round isn’t it? My westy battery checker is showing that the leisure is massively charged.

    It was from vw heritage a few years ago and cost about £30 if anyone has any advice and/or the wiring diagram that would be great.

    I used to have a fisher price split charger that worked fine! And I can’t afford the new intelligent chargers that you can get now.

    Yeah sorry. This is with the blue plastic cover off. Relay open engine off.

  5. look at the pin numbers on the bottom of the relay and then follow the diagram

    Bugger. My numbers are different

    C1. C2. C3 and w1 and w2

    Hopefully can work it out but has

    Anyone got this one?
     
  7. You could try contacting VW heritage for the diagram, BUT if it has previously worked it could just be faulty.

    Sounds like the relay is working as it should to me.
    The relay is open when the ignition/engine is off and as a result there is no power going to the leisure battery.
    When the engine is running the relay shuts and you get power to the leisure battery to charge it.
    The relay has nothing to do with your discharged starter battery.

    W1 - alternator warning light
    W2 - earth
    C1 -starter battery
    C2 - leisure battery
    C3 - fridge

    Ha ha probably not!
    It was wired correctly then!

    But fault finding now.

    When no ignition/or engine off and relay open I’m getting 12v at c1 starter battery and c2 leisure battery but zero v at c3 fridge. The latter being wrong I think as you would want 12v to fridge when engine not running. I do get 12 v if I shut the relay though.

    Any thoughts?
     
  13. run the engine and i bet you get 12v at c3.

    it is a relay designed to go with and absorption fridge which kills a leisure battery quickly but is ok while the engine is running
     
  14. c2 is your output to the leisure battery and when the engine is off you should run all your electrics of the leisure battery

    Yep it does as in relay shut. Cheers that makes sense re absorption fridge.
    So it sounds as though my starter battery could just be lose or faulty? I reckon I should put a multimeter on it when not under load. I guess I should get 12.6 or so volts?

  17. Measure starter with engine off and then on.

    Do the same for the leisure which will prove if the relay is working or not

    Having a quick cuppa then back on it. I'm doing all this while I'm supposed to be fitting a new floor. Oh distractions distractions!
