Starter motor

  1. So, had gearbox rebuilt (again) now have what I'm told is right box for van (cu code) last one was 10mm too short resulting in shifting issues and it leaked oil badly. I am told it was from earlybay. Tried starter in new box, shaft won't reach the starter bush So I reckon I need a new starter.

Anyone got an insight into this? I don't want to buy a cheap Chinese thing made from Toffee.

Can I use existing starter and push bush through a little til it supports starter?

Always the same, solve one problem and create another... Van is 1979 1600cc
    Thanks in anticipation

  2. What starter you use depends on the bellhousing, not the gearbox. Did they reuse your original bellhousing when they redid the box?

  3. No, completely different box and bell housing I think

This prob doesn't help.much, it's back in van now

  5. You’ll have to find a starter (early or late) that matches the bellhousing they’ve given you. Or get your old bellhousing back.

  6. You need the late starter with the longer shaft.

  7. Cheers all, I'll track down a different starter

  8. Worth seeing if GSF have a deal on , I got a reconditioned Bosch which has been great , point being I exchanged an old beetle starter which was obviously too short for my van but looked the same
    I have no morals ...

  9. Eurocarparts have a REMY...any good?

  10. Yep. See if GSF do a reconditioned Bosch. Better than Chinese junk.

  11. Gsf - use code wipe60 and it gets a reconditioned 'premium starter' down to £162. Looks like you still get £42 back for your old one too!

  12. That's sort of what I did. Refurbed Bosch has been fine
