Steering box rebuild

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, May 4, 2018.

  1. Cover plate now refitted with hylomar , took three attempts:mad::mad::rolleyes:
Because box was already full of oil, when the cover got pushed down into place , of course all the trapped air forced oil back out, which I assumed would ruin the hylomar seal, so after two ggoes I realised I'd have to drain the oil to below the level of the fill hole so I could leave the plug out to let the air escape.....

Third time lucky and I have many body parts crossed in the hope that it will no longer leak.

Btw the input and output shaft seals do not leak so I at least got something right.

They fitted the filler plug at the top so the cover plate can go on dry... then you fill to the top with oil, wiggle it and top up. ...

Much simpler than contaminating the clean surfaces with oil as it squidges out leaving you with a new leak from the Hylomar that didnt stick to the oily metal.

I seem to remember mine featured an O ring for the cover.

  6. Is there nothing you can do to stop him taking things to pieces?

  7. Yeah but I'm doing mine the wrong way up so the filler plug is half way up the side, was already full of oil .....that's how I found out it was leaking.
Yep put new o ring in but was leaking, hence the hylonar

  8. Learnt my lesson, I've had enough now:rolleyes::mad:

  10. You know him so well...

I'd much rather he started to put Freya back together again, assuming the leak situation has been remedied. Fingers crossed for a summer road trip. :)

  13. Anything’ll do, but I’d go for the GL-4.

  14. Don’t let him near the dog, or you’ll find Mac walking round on three legs.

Theres a thing about some but not all GL-5 messing with the brass synchro rings in bus gearbox. The steering box does have brass bushings in it so I suppose GL-4 would be best.

  17. GL-5 spec eats yellow metal at higher temps, if the gearbox has any brass or bronze components use GL-4

  18. He's sticking it in his steering box ;)

  19. Yes sorry for any confusion, I know the thread title is a little misleading but you only have to travel through 8 pages of nonsense to reveal the truth:D

Incidentally, page 5 has stuff about the Egyptian pyramids actually being 7 years older than originally thought! That's the truth.

  20. I thought the postings on page 7 about 70% of British women wearing the wrong size bra was pretty informative
