Strange Electric Issue - 1972 T2

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by RhysT2, Nov 13, 2017.

  1. So I wondered if anyone could help, recently my T2 has developed a strange intermittent electric fault. Sometimes the wipers and headlights don't operate when the engine is running, but when the engine is off and the ignition is on they operate fine. If I wait 5 minutes with the engine and ignition off and then restart this seems to correct the fault.

At first I though it was a fuse issue, but as they operate with the ignition this is obviously not the case. I thought that there might be a fault with a contact in the ignition system? I wondered if anyone had a similar issue?

    Thanks in advance.

I rewired my camper last year and I seem to remember the head lights and wipers share a connector somewhere under the dash, I’ve got a wiring diagram somewhere I’ll dig it out and have a look

  3. Might be - There's a large connector made up with 5 or so ordinary male/female connectors under the dash that feed the ignition. They could be corroded.
Best to trace back with a volt meter.

They do share a connector, might be a good place to start good luck

Edit @EggBoxes beat me to it

If they are the original ones virtually every spade connector behind the dash is likely to be loose or broken, at best they need crimping up a bit , worst replacing.
Disconnect the battery, drop the fuse box and check every connection on the back plus the earth cluster near the wiper motor and every block connector you can find.

One thing is that the brass spades go hard and crack so the quality of connections can go badly downhill if you ever disconnect them.
Get a Sealey car circuit tester. I got one it shows the voltage on a wire with an LED bar graph and then with a little rocker switch you can connect the wire by a self resetting fuse to plus 12 or ground to see what turn on.
Great for tail lights and stop lights.

  7. There are some plugs which insert into the steering column under the ignition lock. These are for the wipers and headlamp high beam amongst others. Well they are on the 79. Check these are pushed in firmly if you have the same.
