  1. Took it out to find that on of my rear brakes was binding a bit or stuck - over tightened handbrake me thinks! I could certainly smell it and the wheel was hot.

  2. Taking the afternoon off work to collect my Westy from Beetlelink after 5 weeks of crash repair and other elective improvements! Packing her up and heading directly down to Corfe Castle/Studland Bay for a weekend of chillin’. Outside possibility of dropping into Dorset Volksfest@Wareham for the day on Saturday.
    Very excited!

  7. Took 'Pamps' out of the garage today, and gave her a run to get fresh petrol. Been standing there for almost 2 years, last used it sept 2016 , to go to Lyme Folk Festival, where we were dancing for the weekend. But now its MOT and TAX exempt, no excuse not to use it. So old petrol( about a gallon) was topped up with a fresh gallon, before venturing to Sainsburys, followed by a run around for couple of hours. Coughed and spluttered for a while, lumpy tick over on return, So let it cool down, not that it was hot, attended to cleaning duties, and went out again, found a nice long hill, and charged up it in 3rd, full charley, that did the trick nicely, and running sweet again. Its amazing how much petrol you can lose it 2 years of not moving.. Bet the old stuff was well stale.

    Check your fuel lines ;)

Apparently it’s the degradation of old petrol that leads to the rubbish rubber hoses cracking.

  9. well went out again late yesterday evening, and it was really rough? and sort of fluffing randomly on one cylidner with a faster tickover, and brakes binding as well. Aaarrgh!!

so early this morning took each plug out, cleaned, reset,( a tad too big a gap), took out the dizzy to check points, reset (a tad too big a gap) , and took out each stop solonoid, cleaned and refitted (were only loosely finger tight). Then started it, et voila, running really sweet now.
Then attacked each caliper piston with a crow bar and the help of my best girl, worked back and forth, and lubed on the shiny bit behind the very tatty rubber gaiter.
Took her for a spin, and amazing difference, no more jerking and jumping and squeaking, really smooth runner now,and when up to 40mph, take it out of gear on a flat / downward slope, and it just keeps rolling. Well please. BTW fuel lines replace a while ago, along with the elbows, only original one is the one from tank to pump. (its always got fuel in the tank.)

Having got a bit jiggy with the vactan last weekend, I got home from work tonight and set about Clem's nether regions with some underseal.
    ….Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd construct :D

Funnily in my young dreams of adult life, with the handsome prince whisking me away to a palace over looking the sea, never did I once think that I'd like it to have a campervan sized garage preferably with an inspection pit. Having spent the last half hour getting underseal out of my hair, I'm prepared to forego the handsome prince, and even the palace overlooking the sea, but if someone could arrange the garage and either a pit or a ramp I'd be most happy with the way adulthood has turned out.

  15. Final day before a trip out west...St Ives, then stopping at the Chagstock music festival on the way home.

I got the motor back in Harvey at the weekend - all working fine and took him for a professional tune up.

Turns out his carbs are a little iffy. No idle speed adjustment on #1 or #4. I'll take them off after out trip and treat them to a good soak in the ultrasonic cleaner.

On the plus side, the made 53 bhp on the dyno...not too shabby :)

On the down side that was on the first two runs...no more than 46 on the next 3 and got rather ratt:ley.

I figured the tappets needed fettling, but on opening the rhs rocker cover I discovered that the adjuster for #1 inlet was missing!!!! The nut was there & 2 halves of a broken spring washer, but no adjuster. Turns out it had fallen down the #1 exhaust pushrod tube.

Now, don't forget that the initial indication that something was amiss was a few % drop in power. My drive home from the tuner (15miles) gave no indication, indeed he was driving better that on the way there!!

Anyway, I've pinched a rocker assembly from the motor in my kit car and I think we are good to go. He is still quite tappety on the rhs, despite having set & re-set the the clearance, but I have a (very) full toolkit and an AA card!!

  16. Got the R&R bed / engine cover upholstery back ... glad I went with the basket weave matching vinyl as I don't think I've seen another like it !

Might have bent a pushrod as it popped out.

Took paint tin lid off to look for petrol leak. Decided to re seal the join between the metal elbow and the hose as there have been several occasions it has leaked lioking at the marks on the paint.

Used a smear of gasket making silicone on the hose. Its a type not recommended for petrol but its what is in the spares kit right now. It only has to help the hose clamp make a seal from time to time when the fuel tank is full and the bus leans over.
And now I will be getting a replacment hose.

  19. That did occur to me, so I compared both #1 with one from #2. If one or other is bent, it's not enough to see.

  20. I had a good old session with Filmore getting him ready for the summer, and our annual two weeks on the isle of Wight. Lots of small things on my to do list ticked off.
Replaced the stereo with one I took out of a car about 3 years ago.
Fixed a speaker that hasn't worked for a year. Broken wire.
Oiled and greased everything on the sliding door and made a minor adjustment to the mech. It now closes without slamming. Result.
Oiled the roof vent, so it now opens.
Spent 3 hours trying to adjust the gear shift, as I've been having trouble getting first and second. Then spent 10 mins fixing the actual problem which was a loose coupling. Now changes better than ever.
Oiled passenger door lock, so it doesn't stick any more.
Checked and adjusted valve gaps, the exhausts had closed up a bit.
Tweaked up the strainer cover nuts to see if it stops an oil leak.
Topped up leisure battery and put it on charge ready to refit. It's been kicking around the garage for 3 years.
    Drove it to work.
