Timing issues

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lardy, Mar 19, 2014.

  1. Been over on one of the other forums whilst investigating some issues with setting timing on my 2ltr CU engine which is from a T25.
I installed the engine with all the 2 ltr parts from the broken bay engine so it would fit including changing the alternator as I didn't have the electronic ignition box and parts.
    Has anyone else done this?
On the other forum they're talking about the T25 having a dizzie which has dual vacuum to help adjust timing.
Just wondered if that's why my mark was all the way round to the left. Just wanted to set timing up and then adjust carbs from scratch.
Any advice would be appreciated :)

  2. Static time at 7.5 degrees before tdc or strobe to same mark with vac hose off. If yours is a single can conventional dissy this will be about right. Theres a good explanation that @vanorak did on settung the dissy but ignore the 5 deg after tdc as thats for a twin can dissy as fitted to the T 25.

  3. Thanks Dicky, I reckon the carbs are well out so wanted to start from scratch with the settings. On idle the timing mark is well over to the left and if I adjust the dizzie it just stalls.

  4. your dizzy isnt 180degrees out is it?

  5. Could be, how can I tell, set up by checking number cylinder originally.

  6. Get number 1 cylinder to top dead centre (the old fashioned way feeling for when the pistion is at the top of the stroke with something soft like a pencil with a rubber on the end. take care not to snap the pencil or whatever you're using. If your dizzy is right then the rotor arm should be roughly in the 5 oclock position (the dizzy usualy has a notch here ot a line on the rim)
this is the tdc for cylinder 1. if it's not then something is wrong and you might have put the dizzy in with the slot 180 degrees out effectivley meaning your trying to time the engine using the signal which should be cylinder 4..... i think.... i'm confusing myself

  7. Lol, I know what you're saying fella. I've done that but in respect to the 180 degrees side of things I'll double check.

  8. @bluething !! Just checked the dizzie and the notch on the body is pointing to number bloody 4!!!!! The blokes obviously moved it as I know I set it up properly last year!! Gold star mate!

  9. I take it it's just a case of putting the rotor arm to cylinder one, removing dizzie and turning it so the groove is at number one then reinstalling??

  10. yay! :D undo the clamp all the way and pull the dizzy up so that it's not engaged with the drive slot. turn the whole thing 180 degrees and it should drop back into the drive slot but meaning cylinder 1 is back where it should be (think that's what you were saying)

  11. Result!!!!!!

  12. Mmmnnnn so I thought :(
This is what I've got. If I turn the dizzie round the can is in the wrong place guys and won't fit. Pic below if you can see the mark near the blue terminal? Points to 4 and rotor arm set to 1.
    What's going on? image.jpg

  13. you need to take the dizzy out and rotate the whole thing. that mark on the casing is cylinder 1 TDC. when you say it doesnt fit do you mean the can is hitting something???. get number 1 to the tdc (ignore the dizzy for a minute). the line should point towards the 5oclock position when you reinstall it. The vac can shouldnt hit anything in the area.

I can have a look at mine when i'm home and send you a pic but that's not going to be until about 8pm :(

  14. someone else had this problem ages ago with a t25 type 4.... trying to remember who it was

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

You don't need to rotate the distributor. Simply move the leads round one place.
