Type 4 engine, what carbs you running?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grandmst, Feb 18, 2020.

  1. Hey all,

Ive come into some money and thinking about swapped the current 32/34 progressive Webber on my 1800 to twin webber ICT's, currently waiting on a quote from way out westy Mike.

Anyone else running ICT's? Or is there any other recommendations.

Will there be a noticeable difference from the engine?

Ive only ever driven a bus with my current setup so not sure if I should expext any difference for what will be a decent chunk of cash.

    Cheers all.

I’ve got a pair of DRLAs on my 2.0 type 4 and it’s a million times better than the old FI set up.

34 ICT's on one motor (1915 type 4) and FI for now on our other 2.0 type 4.

the FI, at the moment works spot on. The bus had been sat for six months without starting, it took about ten revs of the motor before it burst into life, came off the cold start and sat ticking over nicely.

The ICT's can be a pig to start when cold, you have to let some fuel pump into them before it starts but that may be down to it needing a tune up on the rolling road near us. When warmed up, it runs great with no complaints.

Nice one. When my FI was at its best it still wasn’t as good as the Dells although I never drive it in the winter.

  8. I went 34 ict’s and i am happy with them. Like any set up it’s worth rejetting them to suit your engine. If i had the extra cash I would have plunged for the Weber twin 40idf’s.
Not sure how much more performance or driveability you will get over the single progressive but I am sure you will see an improvement.
If you’re fancying the twin 40’s Eurocarb have them with manifolds etc for £899 on fleabay

  9. Cheers dude.

My plan is to get way out westy to come and set then up as he sells himself as a Webber 34 ICT specialist.

  10. FI is always going to be best especially if it’s a modern set up like micro/mega squirt

Dell 36 or 40’s I would say are next

    then Weber 40idfs

    then your ict’s

A lamda sensor and AFR gauge will let you set up your carbs to their optimum

the Dells would be superb to fine tweak to suit your motor, I would imagine FI (the old Bosch) isn't fine tunable to the same degree as carbs.

  12. I have twin 40 idfs on my 1800 type 4 and after dyno setup it’s ace. 83hp tested and it pulls like a train.

I have late type 4 electronic ignition and the vacuum connected too.

Gas mileage isn’t brilliant, but it does pull hard and the torque is very good.

I’ve not driven others - did have kadrons on a 1600 type 1 years back and I’d say the idfs are far superior.

I have a pile of stock type 4 injection parts and was thinking of switching to fi.

  13. That's where Micro/Megasquirt come in to there own . you can tune them to every RPM where you can`t on carbs.
Add to that crank fire ignition and coil per plug and you have a totally reliable engine

  14. Hi folks - sorry to hijack but I am thinking of upgrading to twin 40IDFs from Eurocarb. I spoke to them on the phone and they were not pushy at all but recommended those as a great option for a 2.0l (currently running with a single progressive Weber).

I dont think I can stretch to the Dells at this time and as its a 2.0l I thought the 40s would be better that the 34ICTs.

Question: If I go with the upgrade what else should I do at the same time (in and around the engine bay) to make sure I really get the full benefit?

  15. I can't comment on if 40's would be better but might be worth giving this a read about 34's.

Think it's the route in going down anyway get rid of the Webber progressive, current in the progress of booking way out westy Mike to come do the fitting.

Carbs are not my strong point and he seems to have loads of good reviews.

  16. ICTs should be fine (they're much the same as the Solexes fitted to the twin carb type 4s), carbs like Dellortos a bit fancier. Drop-kick the twin-choke Weber over your fence. You might want to get a more free-flowing exhaust as well: you've unbunged one end, might as well do the other.

What you will notice is that your engine can finally breath properly, now you've got rid of the T-shaped manifold. On a type 1 at least, the engine sounds completely different.

Sounds ideal for something like a 2258 type 4, especially if it was along the Raby' Camper Special lines

  18. ...but far too complicated or the average punter.

but you wouldn't chuck it ova'th fence though :D

    #EMPI FTW

  20. Idfs are better for power and torque and will give you a faster acceleration rate, however they will drink more fuel.

Icts (never run them) will be more fuel efficient and as said a good stock carb replacement for a type 4. They may be more driveable but you won’t get as much power as idfs.

In both cases fit a 4-1 exhaust. I run an old empi quiet pack header and turbo muffler. When I swapped this out with the empi type 4 twin quiet pack (terrible exhaust) to make it quieter I could feel a massive difference in driving experience.

A stock type 4 1800 makes 68hp (twin solex ict equivalent) mine with the exhaust and twin 40 idfs makes 83hp if that helps describe the difference?
