What are the differences between CJ and CU engines?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Neptuneblue, Jun 25, 2014.

  1. I have just noticed, after crawling about the engine bay today, that my engine is actually a CU type 4 and not a CJ as I previously thought. It seems that the number on the fan housing is the old engine number which believe it or not still corresponds to the V5, but the number on the crank case is a CU number. I was aware that the engine was a replacement but obviously thrown by the mis-information.

    I understand that the CU has square instead of oval exhaust ports but is there really much difference between a CJ and a CU?

    googled so don't take as gold...
    CU (and CV) engines are Vanagon Engines (1980-1982) with the hydraulic lifters and the new 071 heads that match the later type heat exchangers.
    GE engines also have hydraulic lifters and came with the new 071 heads in the last production year; 1979.
    The older and newer type heads are interchangable, if heater exchangers also changed to match the heads.

    The difference between solid lifter engines (CJ and GD) and hydraulic lifter engines (GE) are;
    * the camshaft (rounded vs flat slope on the cams and the timing)
    * the lifters
    * the pushrods (different length and material)
    * the valve train (although interchangable)
    * the casing itself (bore for lifters and singel vs dual oil relief)
    * and of course the sticker on the fan housing

  4. I wondered about the tappets, trouble with the inter web is it throws up all sorts of 'opinion' and confusing information. In some sites it suggested that the tappets could be both solid or hydraulic in a CU.

    These are mine:

    I believe also that CU engines were installed in very late bays from 1979?

    you mean the lifters? you can tell by the push rods i think one or the other is steel or ally or summat? i vaugely remember reading somewhere, trouble is the case itself could have been built as hydraulic but retro fitted back to solid, you'll have to look although you can tell when you run it.
    @Paul Weeding @zed i'm happy to sound foolish here to confirm my thoughts and re learn....

  8. Yep, I think ;)

  9. Hydro motors have steel push rods - But a CU should be hydro, unless the engine has undergone a rebuild, then it could be either or!! :)

  10. I guess that's the thing - this engine is a Vege reconditioned unit. It doesn't worry me at this point though, as I am having a new one but will be replacing with like for like so will check what the new one has...

  11. hi there ive just bought a 2.0l cu engine for my late bay question is it a straight swap

    If the current engine is 1600 (type1) No. If it’s 1700, 1800 or 2.0 (type 4) Yes.

    Probably.

    Not really, I and several others have done it, what years your bus, are you keeping the 3rib gearbox in?

  15. bus is 73 and was hoping to keep the box

    You'll need a smaller clutch than the 228mm one that's on the 2.0 engine, so probably another matching flywheel, or a bell housing off a post 76 3rib box, and the input shaft is shorter so requires a mod or changing

    Might be best to start a new thread!
