I need to try this.... I've got a 1776, it should do it..... but anything over 60 and I get all concerned about which will explode first, the worry gauges or me. I am such an old woman.

  4. My 1700 T4 sounded like it would blow up at these speeds ......................

    Must have been shagged?
I thought the 1700 was supposed to be a really good engine?

I usually sit at about 65 on the mway. However sometimes I forget and do 70 and even 75!!! I have no oil pressure/temp gauges to worry me so have to judge it by sound/feel/Wobbliness :)

I've got a 2l twin carb with a bed but no furniture.

Some people have a natural ear to know when an engine is struggling and some don't . The engines made in sixties and seventy's are no where near as trouble free like today .
Re doing engines on ...say cortinas and avengers after 80 thousand miles was quite normal .
Yes my 2ltr type 4 will do 70 at a push ...but i would be expecting to get trouble sooner than later , and for what ! 10 extra Wow that makes a big differance to your journey .

If both of you, with the same bus go say 50 miles, one doing 70 and one at 60 ...they have probably just finished putting there awning up and started to brew a tea up, or cracked open a tin of booze when the other arrives ...and they can give you a hand putting your awning up .

    It's all about the journey.

    55mph-65mph...

Doesn't really matter when your riding in a classic aircooled piece of history with a big smile and having people wave at you as you pass.

  12. I had my standard three rib married to a Subaru for a couple of years and it was fine. Third gear was perfect for the roundabouts in France - where you hardly ever have to stop. Now the box has been extended I have to use second more often.

I guess it's horses for courses....I travel at night/late evening so I have zero desire to stick at 55/60 all the way.

I also travel on motorways and busy dual carriageways....dawdling on motorway hills and coming off slip roads at 35mph into 70mph traffic is not my thing, neither is being stuck behind foreign lorries unable to overtake or getting stuck on the inside lane as they blast past me enmasse on hills.

I still get far better mileage at 70mph than I ever got with the 1600 original engine at 50mph.

  16. So when you have positioned yourself nicely in the middle or overtaking lane
    of the motorway
You won't be doing 70mph you will be doing 75-85-90 being pushed along
By Merc Sprinters BMWs or any other modern vehicle that want you to GTF out of the way
Must be very exhilarating for you with the stock 50 year old Braking
And no airbag apart from your faith
    You carry on
    I will stick to 50-55
    With my Aircooly
At the end of the day we are all likely
To be stuck in traffic anyway :)

Speed is all in the head ...and i am not talking about the white crystals . You think you are making Hugh pace when really you are not ....i fall for it when iam in my modern mini , the 10 extra is hardly worth it .
It's different if you are going to be doing 90 95 but then you will get done and pronto .
Or when you could travel by Concorde .

As they say everyone is going to slow when your late .

  18. I have a 2ltr engine bolted to a 3 rib box (god knows how that happened) but it cruises nicely at 60-65 and up to 70 if really necessary but I prefer to keep it to 60-65 as the engine gets rather hot above that... and besides these old things are a bit unwieldy at too high a speed (no power steering and no abs etc). I think it is about enjoying the ride rather than screaming along a motorway holding on for grim death!

    ?

So you are saying how I drive my van is wrong, because it's not how you drive yours?

It's had the better engine because that's how I want to drive it.....what with it being mine and all, and it being a free country.

As for the braking, as explained numerous times, it's repeated braking from speed that causes an issue, the van is designed to stop from its design capability of around 80mph to stop....a more powerful engine is not in that equation unless it's heavier (what idiot presses the accelerator and brakes at the same time)....a higher velocity is a factor, not the motive force that got you to it.

The airbag comment is insignificant given the massive damage your legs would get I'd imagine.

It must proper grind your gears that everyone with a Subaru loves it, loves the flexibility and tractability leave alone far far far fewer of the issues older tech presents.

I can respect people keeping their air cooled, that's because most people don't go fishing every week with some nonsense arguement that still hasn't actually been presented with any engineering or scientific prowess thus far.

  20. I like the van for what it is moony

I understand fully why you have done this conversion
Unfortunately when some of threw your
Air cooled engines in the skip
You threw in with it your sense of humour
I think you will find the reason my gears are grinding
Is because I have a clutch problem that is all

    Lighten up moony
    :)
