The only place I know you can get the cogs is in the USA here: http://www.odometergears.com/products/Volkswagen/Mechanical Speedometer/19 I had three trip speedos rebuilt by JDO intruments, a trick the instrumentation technicians do is to use a good resin glue and very fine copper wire to bind back together cracked cogs, see here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/151655608@N08/31752069444/in/album-72157676136979883/
I had never heard of cotton being used for this, but it makes sense, if you have got 25,000 miles out of that cotton repair, it sounds like strengthening the cog and glue is the way to go, cotton, copper strand, basically seems it needs to be a tough thin gauge strand. I just now googled and they do make special resin for nylon, but firstly using superglue in the crack is a good idea, then gently dab resin over the strengthening strand and let it set. Better than $25 + postage and duty for shipping from the US, and will probably last longer.
I thought I saw a thread early last week where this issue can be resolved using a £4 cog from a remote control model car shop. Or was that something else
There was a post about that There are however 3 or 4 different type of cogs depending on speedo I’d cut a section from a nylon bar and use a combination of a hack saw blade and small needle files before paying that price from America I’m interested to see when someone 3D prints one though
