  1. http://www.buttysbits.com/throttle-kits.html

Its described as "BB-111 LHD 1972-1979 Latebay Throttle Kit (Injection version)" and yes its different to the other kits he sells. If your bus is FI (or was FI now running carbs like mine) then the other LHD late bay link wont work, you need this one. It only appeared on the site in the last week or so as its a new addition to his range.

Not fitted yet, should get to it in the next day or so. It's a quality bit of kit :)

This is a PACESETTER exhaust from the USA. I'd previously drawn a blank when looking for uk suppliers for an off-the-shelf exhaust that fits the triangular h/e flanges on a californian spec type 4 powered late bay - only options seemed to be to get the "rust-before-you've-even-fitted-it" empi that i currently have now (complete pile of doo doo - painted it twice already and its falling to bits at only 2 years old) or get a custom stainless system made up. Paul W does these but he's very busy and they are expensive (get what you pay for i know and i'm sure they are excellent).

.. then i found reference to a system i'd never heard of before - Pacesetter. Limited info on google but at least one good review on thesamba (search on latebay comes up with zip so i guess no one here has had one). I ordered before the brexit debacle so dollar rate was good, paid £104 for the system and a further £12 quid to ship from usa which i think is a bargain. Even if it isn't much better than an empi its' worth a punt for a little over 100 quid i guess.

I'm super busy right now so i wont be able to get around to fitting for a few weeks yet, but got this out of the package today and it looks fine. Some paint flaking but looks solidly constructed.

If i was going to get it stripped and re-coated what would be the best do you reckon - ceramic coat?

  5. Got my throttle link on today - took about 20 mins including dropping tiny washers and nuts on the floor and finding them again. Feels great - the old link was clean and greased so I didn't expect much improvement but it really is noticeable. Much smoother pedal and easier to make small adjustments as you drive. V happy.

I also checked and adjusted my valve clearances today - YouTube videos v helpful to a mechanical numpty like me. O/s was fine but near side miles out. This has cured the minor backfire I was getting occasionally the the Lh carb which is great.

Test drive felt great - lovely evening too, took a pic outside Blenheim gate:

  6. Did our first camping trip with the new puppy last week, all went well without any incidents - two adults two children and dog all seem to fit ok in the westy which is great. Dog didn't manage to stay on the floor as planned though and crept up on to the lower bed when no-one was looking.

Not deliberate, but he sort of matches the CEII colour scheme :)

Camping was great - mixed weather but overall a great trip - Dorset Jurasic Coast area, around 400 miles 'round trip with no mechanical or dog related issues. In fact the dog loves the van so much he didn't want to get out when we got home :)

I have a few minor winnie updates i've not posted yet - a few left over leather straps from when i was making my westy storage box makes a great way to store the umbrella at the back of the headbanger unit - its nicely out of the way there and is also much easier to get to when it's raining (previously it was burried under the crap we carry around under the r&r bed.

I also had a spare led torch, and had a brain wave to use a spring clip and a "spare" hole my van has on the A pillar - so we now have a great place for the "emergency-wee-wee-in-the-middle-of-the-night" torch (saves rooting around in the glove box for all the other shiny torchy lamp type things we seem to have accumulated).

I have some fiamma ramps / wedges for leveling up the van when you're camping on a sloping site. We've managed to forget these a couple of times as they don't always seem to live in the van.. so, i thought it would be a good idea to find somewhere to permanently store them but without taking up valuable interior storage space... they seem to fit great under the floor with the point wedged over the chassis rails - i made up a wing nut/ bolt contraption with a piece of alu edge to stop them falling out. Although its only a finger-tight wing nut holding them it seems to work fine and hasn't come loose even on long trips.

Not a great pic (was leaning under the van with the iphone) but you get the idea:

  9. :)

tbh this was originally just a mock-up / see if it's possible type thing that i fitted in the garage in a few minutes (beer in hand) .. meant to take it out for a test drive to see if it fell off or not but didn't get around to it.. forgot they were under there (you can't see them when fitted) and only remembered after i'd been driving the van around for a few days  luckily there is enough grip on the wing nut to keep them on - done several hundred miles with them there and it all seems to still be secure.

  10. just checked and i wont be able ot get them on the same side as i have my gas tank in the way. need to figure out a fixing to hold one each side of the bus

  11. It's not the gas tank (slider) side - its the other side :)

  12. ill have a look, think it may still be tight as i have my propex exhaust/inlet and also the gas pipe runs there as well. stupid mod cons.

good idea with them plakky ramps..and it means they don't have to ride in the van after you've been on a muddy pitch!

  14. correct :)

  15. you can't see in the photo but they are one each side of the top hat - the bolt that holds them on hooks on to the top hat.

  16. yeah i can see the top hat. is it the one near the front of the van or the back?
