Tested my new heat exchangers by taking the bus up to North Wales.

c200 miles so far, it’s been about 3-4 degrees outside and I’m getting loads more heat than before which is great. First 10 -20 miles or so I got a lot of dust and grime burning off so a bit smoky, but once I was through that phase they are fine now

only needed to put the eberspacher on a couple of times, other than that the heat exchangers were good enough to keep the bus warm

really good drive, just me, no stress of kids, dogs etc or needing to be somewhere at a specific time

quiet roads but really wet and mucky - my new @snotty spec wipers doing the business

  6. LED rear lights upgrade
Great info on this thread, specifically the details posted by @Youngdub

    https://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/led-bulbs.94375/page-4

I picked up some new gen vw light boxes at Volksworld from custom and commercial as I knew the ones on the bus were mismatch cheap aftermarket items, that’s a good start.. lined them with some reflective aluminium tape to get the maximum reflectivity, and upgraded to LED bulbs at the same time (apart from the flashers as apparently these have to stay halogen otherwise my flash rate will get messed up?). I’m keeping my OG Hella lenses, yes they have some minor crazing but they’re still miles better than some modern repros.

    Big improvement!

Need to get some LEDs for the headlights next.

You can buy a flasher suited to LEDs , then the LED indicators light up your surroundings.
    ClassicCarLEDs for all the bits..

Hint .. get the LEDs with resistors otherwise your indicator lamp on the dash flashes dimmer than before as it relies on cold filament indicator bulbs being basically a short to chassis.
LEDs also glow dimly when fed from the dash indicator bulb when the bulb on the dash is on and the indicators are off.
Both of these are solved with a resistor.

  8. Did my pushrod seals today.

I’d had a small “weep” from the pushrod tubes for some time but a switch to the thinner oil meant I was getting a significant drip on the garage floor, too much to ignore. New viton seals fitted all around. Not a particularly difficult job to do but it got a bit more involved when I found one stud had been stripped by a previous owner grr.. luckily I still have my 914 / spare heads sat in the garage in a box so I could swipe a stud from one of those. Disaster averted :)

not test driven yet so hoping I haven’t made it worse lol. To be fair the seals i removed were dried up / brittle and squished so it wasn’t surprising that they leaked.

  10. Got my LED headlight bulbs today. I was so impressed by the difference swapping the rear to LED it made sense to get the front done too.

Easy swap, big improvement. Also replaced the rusty mismatched self tapping mounting screws with some new matching stainless ones whilst I was in there ..

not cheap but they are excellent quality and plug and play. haven’t got a pic with them on ‘cos it’s still sunny here so you’ll have to use your imagination - they are just like the standard ones just bright :)

  11. Whilst we’re messing around with headlights.. I had this original German / n.o.s. accessory lights-on-warning buzzer that I picked up ages ago sat on the shelf

Easy fit just two wires hooked into the fuse box. And it works great!
