Offending part reference 16-18; what is part next to wiper motor ?
Trying to sort slow wipers with only 1 speed working, as this has been case for years I am assuming the wipers should be normal and fast speed but as in picture there are 4 connections. The switch has off, position 1, position 2 and pull position, there is 12v when switch turned off but all connections reduce voltage to 10v when when switched on I am assuming motors is drawing too much current and is causing voltage to drop but why are all terminals giving voltage other than switch is faulty which cant be split. Before I split underdash connector (which doesnt look as if it comes apart) is there likely an intermitant relay is present in fusebox.

  2. That is showing the self parking switch in the wiper motor.
Drop to 10V does sound like the motor is drawing excessive current.

  3. If you care to open up the wiper motor you'll see how the self parking switch works. I could explain at length but best to look if you need to understand it. Also the two speeds work by separate carbon brushes. If one brush has worn out or isn't connected you won't get both speeds.

More significantly, I just tried out my wipers with the blades off the screen. They were incredibly sluggish and took several strokes to get up to speed. I think I'm due some fresh grease in the spindles and motor.

Mine is a 79 and has intermittent wipers. From off position it goes up to low and high speed, down to intermittent. You can also pull the stalk and it will wash and wipe a couple of strokes. The intermittent and wash and wipe functions seem to be controlled by a relay (or maybe two) behind the dash which doesn't appear in the wiring diagram. Has anybody else got this?

Yes, just one relay under the fuse box. Do you have an electric washer pump?

  5. No it's just the pump up version.

Mine too, or at least it was, it's now electric.

  7. Excellent - I've looked all through the wiring diagrams I can find. Where is this one from?

I thought you might ask that. It’s off my laptop.:D I don’t remember where it came from but probably the Samba.

  9. As above, the extra bit is the park contacts for the wiper (your diagram's for an earlier Bay with the switch on the dash). The park contacts just maintain +12V on the motor after the switch has been turned off, so that the wipers complete their sweep, then stop in the park position.

Are you testing with the engine running or not? Low-ish voltage may just mean the motor's working hard due to the wiper mech seizing up. Best to take the whole mech out and clean everything, including cleaning all the manky old grease out of the wiper gears.

  10. engine not running fair point, charging battery too, 2nd speed never worked but since earlier took out connectors from dash cleaned and replaced 1 with new push fit ferrels. Wipers seem bit faster but as said still 1 speed. In fusebox have 2 relays one is hazards guessing other is high beam (position 2 from right) wont be removing dash again as took it all out last year, hindsight again. Can anything be greased such as spindles from externally for now. As normal take one thing out other plays up as have no high beam or dash light now guessing relay is momentary break type I removed at back of fusebox and has given up  as switches normally not culprit and a cheaper option is relay 1st. (have 12v at terminals of relay but must chase wiring )

  11. when removed whole dash and sorted wiring there was any relays infact no spare or damaged cabling now, only thing spare was brown cable near back of dash with I thing white stripe. will check wiring diagram later

Cheers for this diagram - I'll get round to intermittent wipers in my bay eventually. Literally have a box full of vw relays for intermittent wipers to start punting

Don’t use one from a water cooled VW it won’t work; this is the one you need. VW # 111 955 531.

  15. No relays involved in the wiper operation. One's the flasher relay, the other's the headlight relay, which latches. Sounds like you need to carefully trace everything through and clean stuff up as necessary.

If you take the wiper arms off, may be able to get some penetrating oil down the wiper shafts. Best thing, as above, is to take the whole mech out - can be done with the dash in place.

  16. I'm still avoiding the issue after trying to install a new VWH switch my blinkers keep blowing a fuse after a couple of blinks then light up the battery light as soon as it's blows.

My wipers stopped working too after I put the above switch on , couldn't work out why so I crapped up a switch to bypass the stem (which now gets a bit too warm, smelling, dodgy), but it only slowly moves the well oiled wipers across the window. So I'm stuck on a rainy day.

It's putting me off. I'll spend another week fiddling under the dash, lying in the floor and getting nowhere.

  17. Had a quick look earlier and with cleaned contacts and engine running have slow speed and bit quicker speed now

    That’s a result. It’s usually slow and a bit slower. :)
