I know you guys visit the Dent dale area on the TLB camps but, if you want somewhere a little different then either the Goredale scar campsite near Malham or there are campsites in Malham itself in the Yorkshire dales both lovely, not many hook ups but, a lovely local area some excellent walks long and short and above all a couple of good pubs in Malham village itself. I take walking groups around there regularly and I am never disappointed. I did the 9 mile Malhamdale trail challenge with the wife last weekend for charity up there and thoroughly enjoyed the real ales afterwards.
So not to be out done I'm gonna be walking up a volcano tomorrow, Montana Roja . Pictures to follow but here's a generic one
Tlb had a few camps there at Malham. IIRC they did some walking, but obviously there are small kids who wouldn't cope with 12 miles (probably put them off for life) so not quite same as I'm hoping for. That said, if a few families with littluns came, easier enough to organise a 3 miler and a 12 miler. I was imptessed by a family that I camped mear then met on kinder. They got their boys up there and back and the small kids were still happy in the evening. You need a bit of patience when you'd like to do 20 miles but your kids would be fooked after 5. A couple more could put them off for life.
This reminded me of when my boy was about 1, we climbed The Pap of Glencoe with him,. Just edging toward the summit we could hear a family behind a rock shelter and the parents were saying well done kids you'll be the youngest to have been up here today. Then we appeared with a 1 yr old , their smiles dropped a bit
I've not been on for a bit. Up for this deffo. If you can put up with a coughing wheezing knackered hippy and a psycho lurcher, oops, forgot Mrs P too.
2 things put mine off for a long time. One was in Cornwall when we hit a MOD area not marked, adding 6 miles to get back to camp. Second was up Kinder, we decided to add a bit to snake pass for lunchtime pint and grub - it was shut! Even had to carry the ruddy dog that time. One snapper not walked since (now 26), other one got back into it with mates 10 years later. Ex was HAPPY about that, her idea of a walk was round the shops. I could honestly say if I had my life again I'd do almost all of it differently. Life's a ...
You guys sound ideal. I've got over thinking I'm about to have a heart attack, but 40 years smoking hasn't helped and I'm no quitter.
When we do go, it'll be paced to slowest. Trust me, I've been there when everyone whizzes on ahead then waits, only to start again just as you catch up. Soul destroying, I wouldn't do that to anyone.
To be fair it ain't much of a mountain, bigger stuff up int Dales. Nice views and a good stretch thou back to the beach now with beer in hand
What are you walking in? A good quality well fitting pair of boots and some decent walking socks makes a hell of a difference
Issues with base of feet is often down to footwear with a thin insole/sole and walking on hard surfaces ... I regularly do that distance in a decent pair of wellies and my ordinary socks with no probs.
I more or less live in wellies from late autumn until late spring walking the dogs miles twice a day with no problems, I think just getting used to walking is probably the main issue with most people who don't generally do it much, your feet like most things will adapt. Good boots are are must up in the hills thou.
^ Agreed. I hadn't walked much but had spent the last 8 years at work standing up in cheap steelies and other crap footwear.
Me too same for walking the dog in all weather ... nice pair of Aigle wellies. As a semi retired mountaineer I've always had good boots
went up here yesterday to test the legs but it only tested the lungs! (bit too fast and got a bit dizzy). Its at the back of my mums who lives about half way up the valley so I walked to the bottom first to get the full effect. Up the steep way and down the easy way although that did involve some arse sliding. nice little hour or so walk and found a chap working on his bay on the way back and had a chat!
