Whereabouts do you turn left off it to get to the smoke Colin ? as it heads to Cirencester Bath way .

I was wondering that, I used to drive from Bristol to Lincoln almost all the way on it to visit my folks.

  5. I meant to ask if you’d picked one up this trip Mike, didn’t just kampers or heritage buy all the stock up last time? How much are they selling them for?

  6. I of course, did the classic thing of trying to leave mid-afternoon Sunday and having the bus conk out on me in the middle of the field. In some ways embarrassing and frustrating. But then again, if you are going to break-down then maybe breaking down surrounded by the single largest concentration of VW Type 2 bus knowledge in the Universe is probably best!

So thank you to the people who rallied around and spent the last hour of the weekend fixing up my bus and getting her rolling again. Inevitably I learnt a few things along the way – and got a shopping list of things to sort out.

She ran well all of the way home. So a huge thank you to the people who helped.

Oil temperature was 100 degrees C, maximum seen was about 110C on the M40. Heads heat soaked up to about 125 when I slowed down, 110C running on the motorway, using the slightly out of the way Mexican temperature sensor boss position that shows heat soak effects.

My suspicion is its related to electrical breakdown of some sort, breaking down with timing advance when I tried to accelerate gently, and a slightly heat soaked distributor. If I was heavy footed, the problem did not appear.

And again at the end of the journey, I had been driving at 40 mph for about 2 miles and then slowed down, noticed the AFR meter was suddenly going crazy and showing readings all over the place with the idle speed dropping as not all cylinders were firing at idle (unfired mixture shows as lean because it still has full oxygen in the mix) Put my foot down, lurch with no power for a bit then accelerate as though nothing is wrong, back up to 30mph in second gear like usual.

I phoned them this morning and they told me that they had recieved a shipment on Friday from the manufacturers. And that they were prepared to sell me one.
I had to wait while they excavated the crate of Bay Windows from under piles of side window glass, and then cracked it open (the crate not the windows) ..

Including a tube of the primer/sealant ? £15 they suggest you use to seal the edges from water ingress, it came to £251 inc VAT collected.

It has two completely independent circuits - so it means there are four arrangements you can use -
    1. passenger side 12 volts, about 19 amps, based on info on the Samba.
    2. driver side 12 volts, about 19 amps
    3. both sides in parallel 12 volts , about 38 amps
    4. both sides in series 6 volts per side , about 10 amps, half power.

Of course using a 40 or 50 amp capable buck converter you could turn them down by reducing the voltage without wasting energy as heat.. but that could be expensive.

Home sweet home; partially unpacked so I could unload the stuff in the fridge (amongst the thunder, lightning and torrential rain), and the laundry is merrily spinning in the machine.
What a fab weekend, as always.
Thanks everyone for making it the wonderfully helpful and friendly social meet-up that it is.
The next one is in my diary all ready :)
