That is not good for adhering a film of oil to your journals doncha know.
I'd get some strips of 400 grit and do it with that + WD40.

 

...or grey Scotchbrite is good for giving your journals a polish. As @Zed said, you need to give rhat a good scrub with degreaser to get that stuff the surface. And a good workout down the oil galleries with your little brush.

 

Yes. Did the oil galleries with a thin wire rifling brush and brake cleaner, followed by a high power jet of air both ways. Spent some time on it,mind.
