How many different lengths are there.? I'm having trouble fitting my engine and fear that the recently rebuilt transmission one might be too long. If it is, can I shorten the end whilst it's still fitted in the van. Any ideas maybe @theBusmonkey might be tempted.
It’s very easy to swap the input shafts over but I can’t remember how as I’ve slept since I did mine.
There are 2 lengths. You could chop the end off with a grinder but it would probably be better to fit the right one which as @matty says is straightforward with simple tools, nothing to "set up" as it were. They are rock hard and will laugh at a hacksaw.
Was it OK before it went off for reconditioning ? If so talk to the guy who reconditioned it.. they may be able to at least offer you a swap for the shorter shaft it had before it went in to them for reconditioning. Maybe the difference is something to do with the origin of your engine being that NATO howitzer so it had some different requirement, compatible with a much older engine perhaps.
Thanks Steve seems to make sense 6 Both were compatible before the transmission rebuild, howitzer or not. I had fitted a later style? 215mm clutch and thought that that was the problem. I now have the original 215mm clutch set up and finger's crossed it should fit. Personally I doubt it I just need to try fitting it again to be sure before broaching the subject with the rebuilder. I just want to get it sorted before techenders...
The thought was that the rebuilder may have picked out a shaft that was stock for the gearbox, not noticing it came in with an un-hacked but shorter shaft from the installation before. Maybe just maybe you have the clutch plate in backwards.
QED second attempt at fitting the engine proved pointless. It appears that 12mm is correct thanks. The builder has, quite obviously, not replaced the original shaft during the rebuild. This is beginning to get very tiresome and I shall be contacting him tomorrow yet again.
Had original input shaft refitted and bingo mated only took an hour while I waited. Transmission back in the van now and I shall fit the engine in due course. I need to get the linkage connected and the drive shafts with re -geasd cv's joins reinstalled as well. Busy busy! Yippee I can get on with it now. Next stop techenders hopefully!
Transmission and engine now fitted. Today I was able to connect the heater control boxes and cables. Starter motor wired in and torqued up. Half shafts fitted together with the refreshed CV joints. I still have to torque up the socket head screws though. Transmission filled with EP 90. Quite a demanding day really.
Fitted the tinware today, looking shiny. Electrix mostly connected in the engine bay. Was able to fit an original heat deflection plate for above the exhaust. This I had bought from @skirk in 2016!! Will be fitting exhaust tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to post some photos.
I was able to torque up the socket head screws on the CV joints today with the help of my wife. Glad that's out of the way. I do like a schnorr washer! Deflector shield. Fitted the revamped exhaust and even had time to polish his rear wheel nuts.
Most stuff on; battery, fuel lines seem happy so cranked him up. Bingo once the carburettor bowls were happy and the chokes were indulged he kicked into life so just the usual fettling and adjustments to do before TE Always something to be doing, as my grandma used to say....so get on lad.
Couldn't make techenders unfortunately, but I gather it was fun and games as usual. Thought that this comparison JMR gear ratio calculator (courtesy of @77 Westy) table I have drawn up, might be useful if you are having a transmission rebuild or want to know RPM versus speed in 4th gear.
