Changed the coupling in mine this weekend. Need to see if steering lock works now! I would imagine the only thing that would affect the steering lock is the up and down location of the steering column, ie, the thickness or thinness of the coupling, maybe you added a washer under the yoke where there wasn't one before?...or the new coupling is thinner than the old one?
I think the conveyor belt derived couplers (Rock Auto) are thicker than the rubber moulded originals. In which case you are a bit stuffed, as the steering lock is vertically located by the dashboard and crumple strut coming from the front panel of the bus.
Hats off to everyone replacing coupler from underneath . I wanted to replace the bolts so had to remove the cab cover for access . its a PITA job !!
This, I think. From memory, the steering lock has a slot and tab on the column casting that it locks into. If a thicker coupler has moved everything up a bit, the tab may not engage properly.
Snotty has a later bus, the cover just slides up the column. Was this a Group buy one? If yes, did you use the original or supplied fitting for the steering box? I ask because I wonder why that part is supplied - conjecture but perhaps the coupler is indeed thicker and he has included a shallower fitting to keep the overall depth the same? I can't think why else the part is supplied?
Snotty has a later bus with the early column plate If you're changing the bolts, don't forget to use new locknuts
I fitted my new Lares coupler with my original lower mounting boss/flange. No problems with the sterring lock here... Comparing them side by side there is maybe .5mm or less difference between the 2...
When I fitted mine I actually had the sterring wheel off and complete column out and one thing I did notice is that the rubber isolator around the column was slightly misaligned with the hole and slowly getting chewed up. I replaced with new and put a bit of thin double sided tape to hold it better in place.
no I binned the steel part as it is really poor . The new Lanes coupler is 1mm thinner. I’ll just have a wiggle and see if I can get it to latch
