Currently suffering from "paralysis of analysis" Ripped the OG floor & sub floor out & stupidly didn't take pictures, measurements or anything! Could someone please, pretty please, tell me the correct thickness for the OG sub floor & exactly how much of the tin floor it covers. I'm reasonably sure it does NOT extend over the full floor, but need some help. Then, how thick is the OG ply floor (minus carpet/vinyl) that goes over the top. And again does this cover the whole floor? I seem to remember the sub & ply floor stop short under the bed box, but how far. Any pictures, diagrams would be most helpful, even fag packet measurements. It's doing my head in trying to get cabinet & bed box height correct & the datum for these is obviously the floor doh. Thanks all..........
Sub floor thickness is 9mm and I'm going to use another sheet of 9mm on top of that with a sheet of "Marmoleum" on top of that. I have a Vanwurks S/S threshold strip which is designed to cover a 10mm edge. Tony
Cheers Tony. That slips under the centre air vent with no issues then? I used to work for Forbo so good choice on floor finish Do both substrates fit fully across the floor or are there shaped cuts under the bed box etc?
My 73 westy continental had 9mm sub floor and a sheet of old school 3mm hardboard + lino on top. It tucked just under the bed box I think the front panel had a slight cut out for that. I've since done the 9mm/3mm/lino combo a few times and it makes for a nice almost flush floor that the slider doesn't hit.
Cheers Zed, I thought there was hardboard involved somewhere. Marmoleum all the way. Keep the company pensioners in wine
The bottom sheet of ply fills in the 'lower section' in the centre of the floor. Cut it to shape and chamfer the edges so it fits nicely. I pop riveted that down to the bus floor with s/s rivets. The top sheet should cover the bus floor, but an 8x4 sheet isnt big enough so it will need jointing if you want to do this. Top sheet screws to the lower one, in the centre area, and will be held in place by the cabinet, buddy seat, and R/R bed mountings, around the edges, after the flooring is laid I dont have that airvent, so I cant really comment. Make sure you can close the sliding door! Tony
For a start there's no need! And you'll trip over it! And it looks carp IMO. Pic above of mine. Get inside, shut the door and you'll see for yourself what can be done. It's surprising to me how many buses I see where the door smacks into the edge of a thick floor stopping the bottom closing properly. Clearly the installers completed the job without trying the door doh!
WHS^^ is 9mm plus 3 mm not 12mm so why use not just use 12mm then lay Lino on top?? Does the 2 layers have a benefit ??
There is a well in the floor, which needs to be filled & then a top ply over everything to finish. This well is smaller than the overall floor plan. As Zed says, to keep the threshold nice & low a thinner top surface is used. The Westy has a walkthrough vent, which all these layers have to fit under. Plus the height of the floor layers affects the R&R bed hinges and how the bed box mounts. I was stupid enough to rip it all out without reference My slider edging strip is only shallow & I couldn't work out how it all went together.
What about sound deadening what happens if you fit a layer of that? and has anybody done that, how does it affect the floor then?
Thats a good question. I want to fit some insulation and therefore need to take the thickness of this into account. Hence the question of the thicknesses of the individual layers. Is the Berlin floor sandwich the same as Zeds continental or did they change it with the change in interior styles? Perhaps a kindly and brave Berlin/Campmobile Deluxe owner would have a look at the floor layers (maybe through the bed box bolt holes or the galley unit floor mount? Even a close up picture of the threshold would help.
My Marmoleum is "Forest Ground", similar pattern to yours, above, but best described by my wife as naturally slightly dirty looking, should hide muddy footmarks well!! Tony
...it's just another way of doing it....9mm ply and 3mm hardboard is cheaper than 12mm ply plus you can stick lino to the hardboard and if it gets trashed, it's cheaper to replace
this is 2mm foil faced closed cell 12mm LD foam 2mm foil faced 9mm diamond board 2mm flotex.... in theory that's 27mm flooring
I like that threshold strip, very cool. I'm struggling with the concept of very thick insulation as you've then got the walk-through and cab floor to do. Plus the over engine tin and inside the bed box and the wheel arch tubs front & rear, where does it end. Don't get me thinking too much @vanorak this is already doing my head in!! 5 or 6mm closed cell on the main floor will be fine I think, I just wish I had kept the OG boards for a template
