I know but dont they all! Especially the freshly painted ones........ suppose the rust is easier to spot when it bubbles hahaha - did on mine
No I've not bought it yet. I am going to have another look and then make a decision. I will take some pictures and put them up in here. The only way I think you guys can help me more. Thanks for everyone's help so far. Andy
Take pictures of rear corners Battery trays Sills ( inner and outer) Jacking points out riggers Front panel Inner Lowe front panel Door bottoms Sliding door bottom Roof gutters Front and rear arches Interior Pop top canvas Tyres Brakes hoses Rear and front axle Check the chassis number
Chassis number in the engine compartment should be the same as the one you can view through the front left side of the bay window and on the v5 document.
Ok, So i went back and viewed the bus again tonight armed with a camera. I have a lot of pictures so will try and post them in some sort of order. Firstly, the chassis number did match on the engine and inside the front window. So I tried to upload the pictures but they were too large, so i compressed them and they're still too big. Here is a link to my photobucket album. http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/drew_greenday/library/VW T2 The pictures are in some sort of order, I tried to take all the battery tray ones first then the wheel arches and underside. Any feedback on the condition of the bus, I understand it is hard to say so from looking at pictures, and rough cost to get the major work carried out will be greatly apprecieted. The underside of the bus had been coated in waxoyl, hence the black look.
Hi Drew, just had a look at your photos on the bus, my gut feeling if I was looking for a bus' I would be walk away from this one unless you are prepared to spend a lot on this. I can see why the owner hasn't had this mot'd. It's just my opinion, but see what others say, good luck.
Others with more experience will follow with more precise observations, but I can see the following needing replacement: jacking points cab doors battery trays wheel arches engine bay surround lower rear corners. Chances are the sills will need attention and the rear valance. Other bits can probably be salvaged, but it'd probably be an ongoing list of repairs. I'd say a fairly comprehensive restoration would be in order on that bus, so depending on what you're prepared to pay expect a few thousand for resto/repairs.
^ Agreed, it's got plenty of rust in all the usual places, lower 6 inches, lower screen edge will have gone, I'd have a good poke at that rust on the roof gutter, I pushed my finger through one that looked similar to that! Door bottoms need work, all in all it's a resto project, doable but time and money consuming.
here's my opinion. if you can't be bothered to wait for one from america and don't want to import yourself to keep costs down then it's worth 6k i guess, trouble is you're gonna throw 4k at it and for 10k you could have a really nice van with no work needed, i imported mine and it landed on my drive and i got it taxed mot'd and registered for under 8 grand, not had any welding or rust issues.
^ this is what I see too - I got mine from Scotland and it looked similar state .. Ended up needing the whole bottom 6in replacing
All finished nice they sell for £16-20k, £6k is still a fair price for it, if you get it for less you have done well, pretty much none of that rust is mot work.
@rickyrooo1 where is the best place to get one from on import. It sounds like a perfect answer. Thanks for everyones help.
depends if you have the "balls" to do it yourself (works out cheaper but it's scary) have a look on the samba or there's a few guys on here who import and aren't too expensive, quite a few of us have imported you'll get plenty of help should you go that route.
