  1. Could be the relative positions?
Will have another go tomorrow (weather permitting) and report back on how it goes....

Yes, the engine is now in :)

Needed a lot of moving up and down, side to side and also the crank moving slightly but eventually slid on to the end of the gearbox shaft.

All bolts in place and tightened and the jack removed..

Rear tinware put back in place.

Next stage will be to get one of my family members to crank the engine over to see if it turns with no issues.

If that is good then I will get some fuel and see if it will actually work!

  5. Back and forth....

Dragged the wife out so she could turn the ignition on for the starter to engage while I was at the danger end to see if it turns.
Turned the key and nothing (battery has around 12.2 volts so should be enough to turn it over).
Put a screwdriver across the starter terminals and can hear the starter motor whirring around but the solenoid didn't kick in.
Using the key, nothing. Before the motor went in and the key was turned the starter did whir round so confused.

    Thoughts anyone?

  6. First check if the idiot lights on the dash come on with the key and then go off when key twisted to start if so battery low

    12.2v is 40% discharged.

  8. Cheers - will put it on charge again tomorrow and try on Monday.

Left the battery charging overnight and this morning got this:

Turned the key and still nothing.

Disconnected the battery and connected the started cable coming from the ignition switch straight to the fuse box. Checked at the starter end and had 12.xx volts so looks good.

Put the starter cable back into the solenoid and nothing. Must be the solenoid then.

Took the starter out and in the garage connected it to a spare battery I have in the garage (far to big for the van as from my old Audi A8) and nothing, even the starter is doing nothing

Took the solenoid out of the starter and connected the battery - nothing.

Connected the battery to the starter - nothing.

    Everything is dead.

Looks I will need to order a new starter from JK or some such unless someone has one that is working but no longer required??

  10. Just found one on evilbay - a refurbished Bosh unit for £55 with 24 months warranty so pressed buy....

Weather not looking good this evening so will tackle the install in the next few days.

Walking past a car renovation place near where I work I saw this in the carpark:

    Looks like a rear fire!

Got my daughter to turn the ignition on and the engine turns over - didn’t hear anything that I shouldn’t have so a happy bunny.

Need to get some petrol now and see if I can get it to run. Will try at the weekend if the weather holds out.

  13. that looks very tidy

Managed to get around to trying some fuel.

After changing some of my clips as they were not tight enough so fuel going everywhere I managed to get fuel pumped into the carb.

With my daughter turning it over I checked for spark - yep.

Once everything back in my daughter turned the key and smoke was coming out of the exhaust but the engine wasn’t catching and the fast idle cam seems to shoot up??

Tried to video it so you can see and hear.

Not been on for a few months due to work and life but on-wards and up-wards hopefully!!

    This morning had another look.

Cam cover off on the right and started to rotate the engine until I saw the intake port close on cylinder 1.

Took out the spark plug and shoved in the end of a piece of metal and the piston was at the top.

Checked the pulley and the groove was pointing nearly at the case split - so close to TDC on piston 1 then.

Took the cam cover off on the other side and when I rocked the engine back and forth I could see the rockers moving on cylinder 3 so definitely not TDC on cylinder 3.

Took the dizzy cap off and this is the position of the rotor arm - moved the body of the dizzy so that the points look to be closed and here are some pics.

So - I will have to move the plug cable for number one to the bottom.

Oh and the cat came in to help….

Not tried to fire it up yet as I wanted you guys input first.

It looks to me like if you rotated the distributor body about 60 degs clockwise and put the top on as is it would be about right.

If that makes the clips awkward, rotate the body 30 degs anti-clockwise and move the leads around 1 place clockwise.

    Same result either way.

  20. Thanks. Not managed to get to the end result as the condensor gave up the ghost and do not have a spare to will have another look once I get some ordered!
