FOR SALE LHD Steering box

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by PercyTheMexicanBay, Dec 1, 2020.

  1. Hi everyone,

I had the steering box on my LHD bus replaced last month and the garage sent the old one back with me! It had a lot of play in the steering, enough to fail an MOT, but thought it would be worth posting here if anyone could make use of it.

Collection only since its mightily heavy! I'm down in Bristol

EDIT: Also, if it's only use now is for the skip, let me know :D

Did you try adjusting it before swapping it out?

  3. Not personally, it failed the MOT before we purchased the van a year ago and was adjusted to get it through that by the selling garage, and there was still a load of free movement.

  5. Just had a look at their facebook, now wondering if it's worth keeping and getting restored in case the replacement i have bought is made from a potato

Unlikely. Most are made of cheese.

  7. Depends on how much you're asking for it as to if it's worth keeping for refurbishment .
I have a spare which at some point I'll get around to sorting out so to me it's not worth selling for the £30 I'd get for it second hand .

Hang on to it and see if you can get it refurbished by a reputable engineering shop would be my advice ...

  8. Good advice - in my eyes its gone from "in the way" to "worth stashing in the shed" over the course of the day!

  9. keep it.

if the "new" box that's been fitted is a TRW / Brazilian then yes they are made of cheese and unfortunately and will wear out very quickly in my experience. it will however give you some time to sort out a rebuild on the german (zf) box you have there. graham at midland e arly bay rebuilds steering boxes, might be worth getting him to have a look at it. hard to tell from the photos but it doesn't look like the adjuster is screwed particularly far in so there might actually be more adjustment in that box.

  10. Agreed , the adjuster seems well proud , there may be plenty of life left in that . Its totally possible the garage didn't know it could be adjusted so just ordered another - stranger things have happened....

  11. I actually ordered the replacement from just kampers - after it failed an MOT last year and following a quick look by the garage whilst the van was in for something else, we figured it could do with replacing but I could spread the cost by buying the steering box a couple of months before it went in for this years MOT.

How can you tell this one is German? I looked at my photos again and must be missing something!

  12. I looked at some pics of my steering boxes, and I think actually that box you’ve posted pics of is trw not an original zf.

  13. So maybe I have two blocks of cheese! lovely! At least I now know to look for a refurbed one next time!

  15. Ah yes, mine resembles the one on the right! Only had the van a year so no way of knowing when that was installed! It was imported from Mexico 12 years ago, so could have been fitted since then, or back in Mexico?! Either way, its going in the shed!
