Oil Breather Hose?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Devon233, Nov 30, 2020.

  1. 1973 1600 t/p, my breather hose (oil filler to air filter) is getting baggy and kinked and I'd like to replace it. Genuine or repro replacements seem thin on the ground so what are my options? I believe the I/D is about 19mm(?) but I'm concerned that if I just buy some generic straight hose it'll kink as it tries to conform to the required double bend. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

Ask on here for a second hand one, someone is likely to have a good one knocking around

Even the JK repro ones kink. I ended up pushing about 25mm of lengthwise split and opened out 15mm copper pipe with rounded corners inside the hose at one of the bends to hold it open.

This may be easier than finding a replacement that is any better .

An alternative would be a fairly weak 20mm outside diameter coil spring, or a piece of the neoprene or silicone air ducting hose with a spring built into the wall (can find 25mm on eBay, bit too big, just ordered one, may be able to use existing hose as spacer at the ends. ..).

  4. Thanks for the suggestions guys and Mike, I especially like the idea of a spring fitted internally to prevent collapse. I'll have a proper look at mine and if it's still serviceable may well give that a try.

It looks like bus-ok.de used to be selling genuine ones...

...but alas no longer, nor anywhere else I can see.

In fact looking at that image, I don't think the hose on my engine would ever have looked like that so may well be something a PO improvised from another application.

I was half hoping someone would chime in to say the hose off a xxxxx xxxxxxx could be had new on eBay for a few quid and cut down for a perfect fit guess that's not gonna happen :(

  5. IF and that's IF , you have a friendly local scrappy it's worth taking the old one in and asking if you can have a look around for something similar ?
I had three close by when I lived in Leeds - never bought a new hose for anything...

  6. I was thinking just exactly that ^ a few mins ago! We used to have an amazing scrap yard about 5 miles away from here, 1000s of cars, all just sat on the ground and an owner who always seemed pretty cool with customers 'just browsing' for a couple of hours! In fact the engine in my bus is built up on a case that came out of a scrap Beetle from that same yard. We were actually allowed to pull the engine and split the case where it sat to be sure it was a good'n before buying! Anyone who used to travel along the A14 past Kettering would have known it as it was clearly visible from the main road (not an ideal advert for Kettering maybe?). Sadly now gone, and most others like it :(

Your hose in the first picture looks like my JK hose . These have the correct shape but no stiffening fabric in the rubber .

As I said, a piece of 25mm ID spring stiffened silicone air hose is on order here.

  8. Try Auto Silicone Hoses on ebay. I got a bog standard thick wall hose from them for a few quid and it works well, no kinks.

  9. Thanks, even if no-one else is, I'd be interested in hearing/seeing how you get on with the silicone air hose.

BTW, I can't seem to find those repros on JK although maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Can confirm the hose on mine has been there since at least 1996!

  10. Thanks, something to look into

  13. It is. You need something...kinkier...

Silicone hose might do the trick.

  14. I loved visiting scrap yards when I was younger. There were lots all over the place, but environmental regs have seen most of them off.

There was an area of Barnsley which had maybe half a dozen all close together. Some specialised in breaking up buses and lorries.

One place used to keep a very sad looking lion in a cage.

There was a bus graveyard near Mildenhall. When they had nothing better to do they'd weld belly pans over all the missing chassis, paint them canary yellow and sell them to idiots. But they also let you help yourself from the 20-30 scrap buses. A westy clock slipped into a mate's toolbox.

  16. I used tiger flex for most of the big vac/air tubes.
After struggling to find a big J tube one that was 60 € and out of stock and some good size ones that typically fit on
Ye old mass produced, type. 4 fuel injection. They’ve been on there for years. And I haven’t had to change or even look at them. And they’re really cheap if you can find a shop you can get a bunch of the stuff for less than a tener.
Someone here me snarf about it. But it works and it’s cheap and you don’t have to look forever for it.

These ones . And the charcoal box. Not pictured here.
Been about six years and they’re still going good.

Mike's silicon + spring sound good.
Alternative, quality bodge - the plastic confentina pipe that connects to a bath overflow.
