Electrolux rm122 no go

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Theoldvolksguy, Aug 9, 2022.

  1. Hi all,
The fridge in this Devon has become awkward. Hopefully after 12 years I have learned how to light it ok.
Now it's taking about half an hour to light.
So the cooker lights ok. The fridge lights with a wooomph and immediately goes out.
Normally that is a sign it's about to go, but not now. It burns blue not yellow. By this time my finger is much shorter.
Any ideas when it's out what else apart from cleaning there is to do please?
I did try it on a less full bottle and turning down the regulator noting the cooker flame size but no difference.

  2. Probably a thermo couple .. never really liked these fridges much but new ones are mucho dollar

Sorry if you know this already but absorption fridges need to be level.
If not you probably need to replace the thermocouple and check the gas lines.
In the while you're doing that I'd turn the fridge upside down to purge the system.
    Hope this is helpful.

Mine goes woomph when I try and light it on high setting, turn it down and it lights fine

  5. Cheers all three of you!
Yes can try it at one, not 3 as Electrolux instructions.
Beeen a while since I cleaned it- I'd recommend a regular removal and clean.
Even large things like bottles got in.
Later fridges were improved with a blower for lighting.
Electrolux says clean jet with turps. I will persevere and attach a new finger.....
Ps am looking for the black or white front vents -upper /lower if you see any or have had enough of your rm122....

  6. Cheers all three for those helpful replies.
I may try it on one not three as per Electrolux instructions.
The metal prong connected to the thin copper pipe is very black.
Rest seems ok around the burner at the moment but was very dirty behind the fridge.
Ps if anyone sees the upper and lower grilles in black /white I could do with buying them please .

  7. This brings me neatly to my next question....... I too have an old rm122, with the flue on the right hand side as you face the front, and yes mine lights with a whoopf!, ....eventually. My dilema is whether I actually need a fridge at all, in such a small van. Trying to think what I put in it......milk..(could use powdered), beer ( could drink wine), salad, marg, cheese, any cold meat stuff, but I'm thinking I could do without...maybe, use the space for summit'else. Also thinking of doing away with the 2 ring cooker/grill that sits above, and using my portable cheapo 1 ring canister jobbie. After all, most of the time I use the small portable out side, and it's good enough for that.

    Benefits of the above

Gain space where the fridge was,
    less weight without fridge,
no more laying on the floor, contorted , trying to light it.
Gain space where the smallish cooker was,
loose lots of tinny rattles from said cooker,,
loose the gas pipe work and the worry about a leak.
Gain the space under the bed of 2 907 bottles (always carry a spare)
    less weight without 2 x 907 bottles
saving a mahoosive amount of dosh replenishing the 907's, that seem to empty themselves. (£30 =/- a pop)

'Not so' benefits of the above

    No cold beer
    no fresh milk
    no fresh salad
loose space storing those small tall butane canisters
    ?????????

Was possibly thinking maybe, possibly , p'raps............put in a teeny weeny wood burner ,in the corner, flued up and out the drivers window, type thing.

Here is my unit,I knocked it up in an afternoon, just after I bought the van back in 2004, and it has remained unchanged since, having been as far as Italy,(spy the ' el partito comunista' sticker liberated from an Italian lamp post.)

  8. Hi,

when did you exchange the burner and nozzle (the little silver tin pot inside the burner) the last time?
Mine (in a Eriba Pan trailer) was well rusted with dirt and grime after 30 years. Also the inspection glass to the the front was very dirty.
Works well again after some refurbishment and cleaning.
Spare parts I could order by Dometic Service (2001 Electrolux stopped production of camping absorption refrigerators).

  10. Oh! how you jest. well I was at a folk festival a couple of years ago, and after staggering back from the town to the campsite after closing time, having been Morris dancing all day, a dear Chum, and his wife Mrs Chum, were leaning out of their caravan window, offering glasses of Schnapps. Well, be rude not to. BUT I was absolutely amazed at their caravan. It was a fairly small unit, but without an engine, steering etc I was gobsmacked at how spacious light airy and MODERN this thing was, compared to my little Type 2. I really didn't want to leave, but it was about 1.30 am by then.

  11. Most vintage ones do have a certain charm and the Eriba vans have a great reputation and i can see the appeal but not for me thanks
