Finally attacked the slightly sticking N/S caliper on my beetle. Its been sat a few months now and i've just not had the enthusiasm to go in the garage and jack it up. First problem. Twisted the end off my extendable wheel brace. Made in China probably from cheese going by the strength of it. Either that or i've gained superhuman strength. Pad retaining pins removed. First pad out. It was a tight fit and required a bit of levering to get it out. Second one came out a bit easier. There was a tiny gap between the disc and pad so i assume this piston retracted OK. Only occured to me after they were both out that i should have maybe removed one and seen if the disc would now spin. The calipers have only been on 1000 miles and had new seals fitted then. They look shot though (or maybe its just a build up of brake dust and crud).
Looks like it was the outside piston that was slightly sticking, though pumping it out of the caliper and checking under the dust covers only showed a tiny big of corrosion on the outside piston. Cleaned it up with fine paper and reinstalled it. Pumping the pedal a few times then attempting to spin the disc and it seemed fine. I need to give it a bit of a run around and see.
Front brakes seem OK now. Had a run around yesterday to let the old girl stretch her legs a bit. Now over 1000 miles on the clock.
Had a bit of a run round this evening. First time Holly has been in the bug and she wasn't pleased at first. Relaxed and lay down after a couple of minutes though.
