Good to see you back on it Dunc. Have you wound down on customer work then I gather?
I'm still keeping an eye out for a split project but they're eye-wateringly pricey!

 

Yes mate, just doing my own projects from now on , this is priority then the Singlecab will get finished!

 

Plenty of rot to deal with but all the outriggers and jacking points replaced on one side

Cross members done, time to flip it over and do the other side.

Very expensive workbench, it’s called NEXT!!

 

I saw a early cab project on Facebook market place that nearly tempted me but it just looked a little bit too far gone for my liking.

 

The other side is worse but getting there.




Needs a section of floor, inner and outer sill, not hacking too much out at once though to keep some reference points.

Cheers, yes it’s staying red as it was originally some kind of fire department vehicle.

Zinc primed all the new bits





Battered the bulge on one of the cargo doors back into a better shape, of course the inner panel was totally in the way so had to be chopped out and needs welding back in!

 

Cool! I think the fire busses look really good and always nice to return a vehicle to how it was when built. I have the ex Karmann Konnection ‘64 panel. Pictured here at the Pendine hot rod meet which is just down the road..

 

Looks great! Out of interest, what have you used to prep the rusted parts before applying the zinc primer? Or are you only using it on the new, fresh steel parts? (Like the crossmember, jacking point's etc.)

 

All the serious rot has been cut out and replaced but any bits of surface rust just used a rust converter, kurust type thing then zinc primer.

My impression with zinc primer is that it's a bit redundant over metal with a layer of rust converter on as the zinc requires contact with bare metal in order to provide any rust inhibiting effect. Not trying to critique your efforts, just curious to see if you have a difderent understanding of it? Always trying to learn more from peeps on here
