1.6 twin port, awful smell

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Daves dubs, Jun 3, 2022.

  1. Hi everyone. I'm Dave from Bristol and I'm new to the late bay. I drove my 1.6 twin port bay from Bristol to lands end to collect a new interior and she didn't miss a beat. When I set off for home the next day she started making an awful smell, I mean a really terrible stench. Oil level was OK but alternator was too hot to touch. Drove home carefully but seemed to have less power. Starts and drives fine ever since but same stench once she's warmed up. Has anyone experienced this? I'm thinking it might be the alternator or maybe piston rings?

  2. Welcome to the mad house.

What sort of smell? Burnt oil, fried electrics?

Have you removed the fan belt and checked if there's any noises when you spin the alternator by hand?

Is there any oil on your heat exchangers?

  3. Heat control wire to the heat exchanger May have snapped allowing heat to enter the cab
What sort of condition are the exchangers in ?

Or someone has put kippers on your manifold

  4. @Daves dubs check the foam seal didn’t get sucked into the fan housing at the back

Boiling battery - bad eggs-ish / exhaust fumes type of smell - acrid.

... and to be "out of the box" did you put any "new" interior foam bits over the engine and haven't taken them out yet?

  12. ^this. Run the engine and measure the battery voltage. If it’s above about 14V, your alternator is cooking the battery.

  13. You also get this when the engine/transmission earth is dirty.

Boiled batteries get hot to the touch and stink of sulphur , really horrible.
Lead acid batteries should never get hotter than about 40 degrees C .

The spray the battery gives off will rot your battery tray - probably worth wiping down with bicarbonate of soda solution then lots of fresh water then drying..

Burning varnish on an alternator is more acrid.

Both are pretty horrible, but some kind of voltage regulation fail boiling the battery is likeliest, the alternator ending up hot because it is running maxed out into the battery in order to kill it under the orders of a failed voltage regulator.

  15. Thanks very much for your responses. I'll check into all those things. Much appreciated! Dave

  16. If that is the prob, if you’ve got an internal regulator, easy enough to change. Unlikely it’s damaged the alternator. You may/will need a new battery if it’s been toasted.

It could be dud shorted cell in the battery rather then the regulator but if it were me I'd replace both anyway.

  18. Hi again everyone. As advised by snotty, I checked my alternator output and it was 20v so cooking the battery as many of you suggested. Alternator is a bosch al82n with built in regulator which has clearly failed. I've been unable to source a replacement regulator on line so I tried to connect up an external regulator but no joy. Could I use a bosch 9190040099E regulator and if so does anyone know how to connect it to the al82n? Alternatively does anyone have an al82n internal regulator for sale? Thanks. Dave

  19. What's the top of your alternator look like? Has it just got a big B+ terminal connected to the red battery lead, plus a tab terminal for the alternator light. If so, the reg's internal and easy to change (and readily available).
