  1. Do you have dual carbs?

Yep, type 4 too. Twin ict 34s. Suppose that’s a stronger setup.

  3. Seems to be! Mine has Dell's on an 1800 Type4 and it seems fine, but the pump jets are chuffin huge. I have an awful Chinese 009 copy, so a 123 will happen when I've got funds, need to get the value out of what I have, first, also, got other projects on at the moment :)

The main benefit of the vacuum advance is you can ease off the throttle at low revs cruising, the vacuum increases the timing to burn the leaner mixture and you save some petrol. As soon as you put your foot down, the vacuum disappears and the timing goes back to "normal". There is far more benefit to be gained from this in a Beetle as they go faster at lower throttle so take advantage at higher cruising speeds than a heavy bus does.

Sometimes, going slightly downhill, I can hit that lean cruise at 65 mph, vacuum signal high and AFR up at 16:1. Then it goes level and it all goes away :(

Got annoyed at a truck I tried to overtake on the M4 the other day. Both going downhill both doing 70 GPS mph. Had to back off as he was rolling so fast. Took him on the next hill..

  6. what are your jet sizes??

  7. I don't recall, only that the pump jets were big, may be 65 rings a bell, the mains and idles are what we expected.

I should have written it down, maybe I did on here

  8. Did anyone get a definitive answer on which 123 for a Type4?

As they don't even tell you which model that is... are you sure it's not the exact same one?

  11. This is what I received in response to my question which 123 for a Type4, and should I get the VW-R-V.

"No it’s not as the say it is only suitable for Type 1 2 and 3 its no longer of type 4 vw it is the Porsche one that’s suitable for the type 4, as advance curve 7 is for (Bosch 0231 172 007 VW 411E/412), curve 8 is (Bosch 0 231 172 009& 011 VW1600e), Curve E is for (Bosch 0 231 172 007 VW 411E/412E), and curve F is for (Bosch 0 231 172 009 & 011 VW1600E) as well, all other curves are Porsche curve if the engine is none standard the curve a listed in a logical ascending increase in advancer the advance coming in earlier so what I saying is a none standard engine you pan progress through all curves ascending and you could find your curve that’s more suitable it the engine that’s not listed for the type 4 the ling to the product on the website is below and the table of curves is below that any questions just give me a call, I should be able to clear them up in a short phone call, did you want to get this on order?"

It does give a part number as 507825.

On the other hand, none of those listed distributors were fitted to a bus type-4. I think that part number is probably their own stock number.
The one Mr Westy recommended is a better match for the stock distributor.

  13. I was unsure of his advice :(, so I rang the chap, this was back in August, he tried to sell me a new coil and a set of silicon leads too, saying if I didn't buy all three new, it would make any warranty claims more difficult, that set the alarm bells ringing, I can tell you, but it also made made me doubt the advice.

I imagine it will work, and it won't need a spacer, but it's very odd that the "recommended" dizzy has suddenly changed from the 123-VW-R-V. I see that VW Jim still sells these and not the Porsche one....

I can’t find a 123 distributor part number 507825; maybe that’s a number assigned by SC? I’ll guess the tech chappy is looking at the 123 info which states that the 123/VW-R-V is for VW type 1, 2 and 3 and Porsche 912 and 356, the 123/Porsche-4-R-V is for the Porsche 912, 914 and 356.

I looked the dimensions and knew that the 123/VW-R-V would fit and there was a curve for a 1700 (type 4). The price suggested the 123/Porsche-4-R-V had a Porsche price tag for more or less the same thing, and as a VW car was nearer to a VW bus than a Porsche, I went for the 123 with a VW in the part number.

Bosch 8mm silicone leads, blue coil and NGK BP6ES plugs.

It will work but the dimensions are the same and a spacer ‘should’ be used but most just push the distributor in the hole until it won’t go any further and tighten the clamp,

    He’s a salesman and that’s what I would say – but I wouldn’t buy a distributor for a VW from SC.

  17. I have a new blue coil, it's funny the tech tried to tell me not to use this, but to buy a new oil filled Pertronix coil, which some say are prone to overheating, but I should add my existing one hasn't.

Where did you get your leads from?

    Thanks.

Sorry Andrew, it was more than 10 years ago and I can’t remember where I bought the leads from and I have no record in my email history. As far as I know they are NLA anyway.

  19. Hi all,
For what it's worth I fitted the
123/TUNE+ 4-R-V-V (bluetooth), replaces Bosch distributors for VW, Volvo
With no spacer and just the generic one fits all curve.
When it eventually goes for a rolling road setup with the new (to me) carbs, the tech can have a fiddle with the curve then.
