SOLD 1972 T2 Westfalia Camper - Reduced Price

Discussion in 'Late Bay Classifieds' started by Owen Snell, Aug 11, 2022.

  1. We've owned this van since 2011, we imported it ourselves from California. A change of circumstances means it's now up for sale.

The original restoration thread has a lot of information about the work carried out between 2011 and 2013, the van being repainted and fitted with a new interior. Almost everything on this van has been replaced / upgraded at some point during our ownership.

See following posts for a detailed description, if anything is in doubt, please ask.

I have access to a 2 post lift, so a full underside inspection can be carried out if required.

The van is located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.
Lots of pictures to follow, I can take additional pictures of anything requested.
Please contact via PM or on my mobile (call / text / WhatsApp) - 07816 422567.
    Price now £21,000

  2. Bodywork

Please see the above restoration thread: https://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/1972-crossdresser-restoration.662/

There has been a small amount of welding done underneath in the past, but this camper has an extremely solid and original underside. I have a 2 post lift at work, so a full underside inspection can be carried out by any prospective purchaser. I also had the van waxoyled at Rustbuster in Spadling, so the bodywork has held up well 9 years after painting. There are a few small defects / bubbles, but this is a very sound van with minimal filler and very nice paintwork.

  3. Interior

J&S Upholstery built a custom interior with a full width rock and roll bed, plus a buddy seat. All the rear seats have lap belts, the front seats have inertia reels. Seats 6.

The interior is equipped with a 2 burner hob, a 12V compressor fridge and a propex heater. All interior electrics are 12 V and LED lights are fitted. On hook up, the power goes through the converter so the 12V lighting / fridge / propex run off the hook-up or off the separate leisure battery. There’s a 100W solar panel fitted to the rear roof rack that charges the leisure battery. Everything in the van running on 12V means it all works off-grid.

I also added a roof bed for the kids, not currently fitted as the kids are grown up now. The brackets are still in place and the bed is included in the sale. This is the early type roof bed as it’s a front hinged roof on the crossover. J&S upholstered this in orange to match the van.

  4. Mechanical

Front brakes – New discs and refurbished calipers fitted at the original restoration. Just fitted new pads, 2 x replacement hard lines and new front flexible hoses.

Rear brakes – New ATE wheel cylinders and drums just fitted. The previously replaced wheel cylinders had corroded internally, so I fitted the high quality ATE cylinders this time.

Steering – All new track rod ends fitted during the restoration. Just fitted a refurbished steering box.

Suspension – OEM spec shock absorbers fitted during the restoration. HD front and rear ARB fitted. This arrangement retains the original ride comfort, but gives additional stability when cornering. Suspension is stock height on original steel wheels.

Control upgrades – Wood rim steering wheel, aluminium heater control knobs, aluminium winders, vintage speed shifter, upgraded throttle linkage / pedal pivot. Lite Steer power steering fitted.

Additional instruments – The OEM dash clock was replaced with a period look rev counter which is more useful and looks ‘original’. An oil pressure gauge and temperature gauge have been added.

Heating – Just repainted the steel pipes / control boxes and fitted new accordion pipes. I also had the correct OEM heat exchangers repaired so the system is really efficient. All heater flaps present in the fan housing and snail fan.

Gearbox – Cog box rebuilt gearbox with long ratio 4th gear. Linkage re-bushed at original restoration.

Engine – 2056 cc Type 4 engine (modified original fitment as it was a California import). Fitted with twin IDF pattern throttle bodies and multi point electronic fuel injection with Megasquirt control. The FI kit came from The Dub Shop in the USA. An external oil cooler is fitted.

  5. Other work / modifications:

Towbar – I fitted a Watling towbar after the restoration and have just taken it off and re-painted it before re-fitting. Older type, 2 plug electrics fitted.

Poptop – New poptop canvas fitted during the restoration.

Seals – All new window seals fitted during the restoration, including for the Westfalia louvred windows which were completely stripped down, polished and new seals fitted. I have just fitted a new pop-top edge seal as the previously replaced seal wasn’t gripping the roof edge tightly so was a bit loose.

Entertainment – A Panasonic AVIC double DIN unit is fitted with large screen. This includes DAB radio, Bluetooth interface and NAV. Front and rear speakers are fitted, the balance can be adjusted on the head unit. A reversing camera is fitted that can be seen on the head unit display.

Noise insulation – Dynamat sound insulation fitted around the engine bay to reduce noise when driving.
