I've also got a Sparkrite Voyager trip computer somewhere in the garage (was 1980s). Worked pretty well

  6. It worked pretty well on my old Manta . Do have to grovel underneath to fit the propshaft pickup. I’ll see if I can find it.

In the fifties sixties and seventies in Oz, Ford and Holden would produce their latest models in all sorts of forms. You’d get a saloon, a station wagon, a pick up (Ute) and a panel van all from the same saloon car base.

Ford had so many models out at one time when they introduced their Escort range in all the above versions and the slightly larger range of Falcons too and Im pretty sure you could get transits too. The Ford muscle car was a two or four door monster engined GTHO that left a lot of rubber at a lot of traffic lights.

Holden had the complete range too but instead of the Escort they had the Torana which was a long bonneted thing not too dissimilar to UKs capris, I don’t think there were commercial Torannas though but there may have been, some earlier Torranas were a bit like Vivas. Holdens muscle machine was a large two door coupe called a Monaro with large very large and extra gigantic sized motors and was the coolest thing on wheels.

The Chrysler range wasn’t quite as large but they had the very first station wagon with a one piece tail gate that opened up and opened sideways too with an electric window instead of a two piece tailgate arrangement anyway it was the first I’d seen in Oz. The Chrysler range were Valiant and they had several. ‘Super’ cars with some featuring their Hemi engine which was another crowd pleaser and their top of the range was a two door coupe similar to and in completion with the Monaro and GTHO, this was called the Valiant Charger and clearly borrowed from their Americano parents Dodge Charger .

When some of the muscle machines first arrived, like the Monaro, they had such a huge engine but only a two speed auto transmission which made them great to improve with three and four speed trannies and the last one I drove was here in England and it was badged as a Vauxhall Monaro featuring a five or perhaps six speed auto coupled to a six point seven or six point nine V8 that I drove around messing about with some pals and lit the tyres a few times and managed to destroy two tankfuls of juice on a Sunday afternoon without much effort at all. This one had a lovely suede interior and it shames me to say this but the funkiest cup holders of all time, this was about ten fifteen or maybe twenty years ago. My memory is so foggy with dates and timeso_O. Then gradually, the European stuff came in dribs and drabs but didn’t really catch on with their versions of what Ozzies should have, there was an Austin freeway which was only available as a station wagon I think, but it was a Morris Oxford with a six cylinder in but was about the same performance as an Oxford and quite thin too:(.

They also brought in a Tasman and a Kimberly which was an A series engined Morris 1300 and a B series 2.2 land crab which went down like a lead ballon as did their P76 which was a bit like the Leyland embarrassment / ambassador.

As all this was going on, Toyota and the Corolla plus their four wheel drive stuff was making headway and the Datsun range was pushing everything to one side because they included everything like lecky windows as standard, and a few years back the Holdens and Ozzy Fords were cleaned out and now they’re collectors items it would seem.

Bet I’ve mis remembered loads of stuff

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,rose coloured glasses maybe :)

All the vans I ever ran back in the day, had a shelf fitted above the windscreen with bolt on accessories fitted. There would be all sorts up there. A music amp, a graphic equaliser with rows of flashing lights, a cassette or eight track, sometimes a large CB sometimes a burner, even a radio cassette sometimes. I had wires connected up and running everywhere behind that lot. Usually with tri axial type speakers fitted underneath the front seats to get that bass in your bum thing going, Billy ocean had a good track or two with nice drummed up starts on .:)

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,yeah, infantile,, I know :);):)
