The final piece of the furniture puzzle is complete! Cooker unit with 2 burner hob and grill.
I just need to mount it to a swing out hinge and get it plumbed in (apologies for the shadows from the tree in the early evening light).

  2. Lovely work James hope you and Max can soon hit the road for a full Camper experience. No need to apologise for the trees they got here before us and will probably be here long after.

I hope so too! This year's plans have been abandoned. The baja is keeping me busy for now!

I've just read all 86 pages. Absolutely awe inspiring work and a beautiful van as a result! Kudos to your energy, perseverance and standards of quality!

Now I really need to get some progress going on my engine rebuild... :D

Thanks for reading all of it! Learnt a ton of stuff doing this resto, the bug resto seems a doddle compared to this.

  6. Just been reading through this thread and it's been very helpful! I'm just starting on mine, doing the N/S front cab at the minute and your photos are invaluable for seeing how it's meant to go together; mine is a patchwork of repairs over reapairs so it's a nightmare trying to work out how it's meant to be.

Thanks mate, glad it's of some use! As rusty as ours was I at least didn't have many horrid repairs carried out by previous owners to deal with; it was relatively unmolested. Looks like you're making good progress on yours.

Made the ever important herb and spice racks for the van to mount inside the cooker unit.

Also got the stereo wired in today, and all seems to be working. Just need to mount the speakers and tidy it all up a bit.

Alpine stereo and front speakers fitted to the van after being sat in the garage for 18 months or so.
Broken in with some Creedence Clearwater!
Rear speakers to follow next month when funds allow.

A bit of fabrication this weekend for Iris. Made a swingout bracket for the cooker unit so we can cook standing outside the van. Just need to get it powder coated and fitted now.

Swing out bracket back from the powder coaters this week and all installed. Works a treat!

And the swing out in action! Lovely stuff. Hopefully get the cooker and heater plumbed in soon so I can use them.

What's the scraping sound James? :D

I fitted a ball transfer unit to the back right corner to take some of the weight off the hinge.
It's a bit noisier than I thought it would be though. I thought this was one that was happy to be fitted in any orientation, but it definitely runs smoother with the ball facing up.

Might take it off if it annoys me. The hinge feels pretty solid so it's probably overkill.

Tried the cabinet without the wheel and it just catches the top of the metal trim when I swing it out. The wheel is to stay!
I could file down the metal corner trim that's catching but that sounds like effort.

    I was just messing. :)
Had that been my work the sound would have been caused by end grain plywood delaminating as it dragged over the floor after which I'd probably lock it in place meaning to tackle it...later.. but actually never swing it out again. I have a mental list of such things that I never seem to get around to.

    Me too!
Currently the little plastic vent surround on the passenger door is forever falling out whenever the door is opened, and the window has detached itself from the lift channel. I keep meaning to fix them as Max gets royally cheesed off every time she's in the van with me. If it was the driver's side no doubt it'd have been fixed by now.

I have several pieces of van that won't stay put stashed permanently in the glove box. Both of the plastic inside cover bits from the cab door inside door release spring to mind, and heater levers, and...

Hey bud, how did you get the deformation panel to fit? I have once again been using your thread as a guide and I’m about to do the same job on my bus but have exactly the same issue with the new crossmember and deformation panel. Did you trim the top edge?
    Cheers

Hi mate, yes I ended up trimming the top lip on the deformation panel so that bottom lip lined up with the bottom lip of the valance.
Crank up the welder as both the panels are pretty thick.

yea will do, I normally countersink the holes in the top panel and drill into the bottom panel too, to aid penetration. I’ll trim the top edge too- seems the only way to get a good fit. Cheers
