No contest test for me any longer. As a amazon prime member I get tv and next day delivery, and the sales seem hassle free, obviously I have no idea what it’s like as a seller but god eBay is absolutely pants on both counts lately!

  2. you can't beat amazon prime's ability to deliver, next day ( or even sometimes same day) but i really don't like them as a company - heard some bad things about the way they treat employees plus how much tax do they pay? everything you buy from them is money that your local high street doesn't get (and those poor b*starts still have to pay business rates and full-whack corporation tax) AND that idiot bezos with all of his billions chooses it to spend on jollies up in to space with his buddies with a massive carbon footprint rather than doing any good.

only positive is that they are at least using electric delivery vans pretty often around here.

given the company name, he really should just BUY the real amazon and stop it being chopped down. 02p etc.

i only use them as a last resort.

Prime sure is convenient, but you have to be careful who you buy from, just like on Ebay. If it's not Amazon fulfilled you can end up with similar problems trying to get your problem resolved or your money back from the seller.

That said, I've just cancelled my Prime. It was quite handy when you're working on a project and realise you need a box of ring terminals quickly and they dont have any locally (screwfix/B&Q etc). But I was starting to rely on it for exploring some new TV shows, and twice now, they've changed a show from 'Free with Prime' to 'Pay $$$ to continue watching' in the middle of the show. I'm not paying 15 quid to watch a single season of a show made in the '70's.

  4. Exactly how I feel - especially regarding tax and the actual Amazon rain forest.
I got into Amazon Prime by default 2 years ago - I made a one off order and didn't notice the tick box at the bottom - "uncheck this box if you DON'T want Prime" and was paying £8 a month for 6 months before I realised - got it back eventually and now will not use Amazon. There are now over 20 million people in UK paying their £8!

    Agree with all this.

Convenient, but at great cost to the planet, and the poor bastards that work there… ideally, you want to walk into town, and nip into Arkwrights hardware store for your fork handles

    Mmm?

I’m only thinking about this on a personal consumer level, it’s evident the company has other issues it should address that I’m pretty unaware of ( other than watching the film nomadland) but the company are extremely successful so I guess like Microsoft, Apple etc it attracts attention on all aspects of its business model?

You can't beat them for convenience and speed...

But, they are a huge pollution creating company who could do more good with profits... So could the majority of other global multi million dollar companies. No?

  11. I use whichever suits best at the time. I’m certainly not going to cut my own nose off to spite my face.

  12. I never really understood that phrase.

Is amazon your nose? or your face?

Or are you actually considering facial surgery? Please elaborate.

As a buyer eBay is far better for a lot of tinkering/project related work on cars, as you can find every part new/used/nos and bolts/fixings etc in every size at small quantities, I’d pay for an eBay prime equivalent but it’s not the same centralised ultra slick business model that Amazon work to.

I think the Amazon ‘experience’ from ordering, multiple delivery options, tracking and returns is excellent, and to me is worth the £8.

I'm not one of the tinfoil hat brigade, honest, but I do find the resetting of people's expectations disturbing.
One of the things we used to love about Spain was that Sunday was a quiet day. It's changing but the supermarkets and main retailers were closed, no post, no couriers, just a relax day.

The expectation of ordering something in the morning, and receiving it that very evening spills then into all walks of life. I want it now and I'm not prepared to wait...

I use Prime a lot - not a great fan of the company but the service is really good. eBay for the odds and ends and second hand stuff.

It’s interesting as just before Xmas they announced that they wouldn’t accept payment I think by visa as it was costing them too much in transaction fees…poor loves. Today on the news they have changed that decision as they in ongoing talks with Visa. Given they are taking over the commercial world I’m surprised they don’t have their own banking business.

Amazon prime is quite handy. Not everything is available for next day delivery but they give you unlimited photo storage which is quite useful.

My local high street is useless as (a) it's 10 miles away and (b) it never has and never will stock the range of products I wish to buy.

Ebay and Amazon are 50/50 with me. Goes down to price or availability.

Tax dodging is not the fault of the big companies. It's the fault of the government for allowing those opportunities.

If you are buying through Amazon, go through Amazon Smile which donates to your nominated charity at no cost to yourself.

Ebay has had its day , far too expensive to sell on there . I recon its days are numbered to two or three years. Competition in the form of facebook market place and gumtree along with Amazon will be the death of it.
