Quite a bit to fabricate and repair on the back section. But I’m still enjoying the “journey” and very pleased with today’s progress.

Who ever tried to repair it made it so much harder to remove but it’s done know. I’ve removed the crusty roof supports as well this evening (sorry forgot to take a pic) The tops of the side panels are to far gone so they will be removed in the morning then I can fit the new supports. Still undecided on reinstating panels or fitting the windows that came with the van. They appear to be made for a panel van conversion as the ally frame has a curved fitted to match the panel (see pics) But unfortunately I have no idea what type of rubber should be used to fit them. The rear windows have sliders in them but the middle is fixed but still in an ally frame again with a curve fitted. Perhaps someone one here has some info on them. 37198A54-81DE-4913-9317-A35E2539D337.jpeg A0093096-893B-413A-8A88-F75B074990D3.jpeg 5540BFA0-0B4E-414E-9E21-BF0AE41C3F9A.jpeg 963EA22D-8A94-4F36-8E5A-EEE3A0CE1F6B.jpeg E5143790-C8FA-4287-926D-A7D4225AD0B9.jpeg

You are moving the border of "too far gone" much farther :thumbsup:

  5. go easy with leaning the ladder against it when you are welding. you know you can buy a complete roof top skin.

  6. Whilst welding I did have the steps side on and opened up so no weight on the van.
I’m refitting a pop top so only need rear and side sections I did toy with a complete new roof but the front on mine was so rotten the tops of door frames were gone and poorly fabricated pieces welded in so I went with a front roof cut which included the frames. This was the easiest and most cost effective way for me to drag the bus back from the brink.

Looking at the passenger the existing looks bad so will need to replace from roof cut down so this will have to wait a while. I want to concentrate on the rest of the roof whilst we still have good weather.

I seem to remember you bare metalling that roof cut and now it's as rusty as my wheelbarrow.
You might want to think about protecting all your hard work with something waterproof particularly the welds which will be impossible to clean all the rust out of.

  9. On it this week, been awaiting time and funds. Was going to tackle it today but the heat and Wedding Anniversary put pay to that.

Hetch primer work great, and can be used in spray can for touch up.

Not waterproof. I didn't realised it was outside...

  14. Decided to rip the ply up from the cargo floor. Kinda wished I hadn’t now. What I thought was pretty solid underneath apart from one out rigger now seems to be another hoodie show like the roof. As you can see from the pics it’s had some dubious repairs in the past. The passenger side has a floor patch put in over the top of the old floor and doesn’t seem to be welded as I can lift the join up and push the floor down where it meets the side. And it’s had a huge L shape piece of plate welded in down the passenger side and across the back of the seats. Again welded over the top of the original floor. From below it looks like a patch of about 100mm running down the side from the sill, the original floor still feels solid past the patch so I’m confused as to why he didn’t just use a small piece instead of covering half the floor. One floor support is gone where the hole is. I guess it needs to all come up for a proper look at what’s going on where the floor sits on the supports. All feels solid underneath but I think for piece of mind it would be better to remove and inspect the supports. I’m a little disappointed with myself for not being a little more diligent when originally looking at the van more than anything. But I suppose once done it’s something I won’t have to worry about for a good few years. 8F2A7239-DECB-40DA-B4B4-2227F56C5681.jpeg C1E9F411-9902-4259-8DF7-93861245F628.jpeg 48231954-F317-4D54-95E7-ED945B9B4B44.jpeg A2B68ADF-2E74-4A54-B4F8-144917F6AF8C.jpeg

Most of the corrugated floor looks "wrong, yet the pressings at the rear look "right". I reckon it's had the floor replaced with very cheap repro floor halves, than your plate slapped on top later when that rusted through here and there. Your van will go faster with all the chunky steel you're removing.

  16. The passenger side has had a repair section placed over the top of the original covering the pressings I think it’s one of the corrugated patch panels you can buy to patch holes, I think they just thought ***** it and laid it on top . Your not wrong with the weight saving. I swept up all the rust that had fallen from above whilst I’d been doing the roof. Out of curiosity I weighed it… 2.1 kilo’s just in rust! There was probably a Few extra kilo in filler on the roof I removed as well plus the dodgy plating they had put in down each side. She must have weighed double what she should .

How thick is the plate lying on the floor? 2mm? that's going to be worth weighing!

that’s what I used on all my bare metal- amazing stuff, dry in 5 minutes and it’s bullet proof when hardened.

  19. It may be just under 2 mm only the first 100mm is actually a patch the rest is excess just left screwed on top it’s staying where it is until I finish the roof. I’ll probably get my money back on the new floor if I weigh in the excess metal I’ve found

  20. That is why I returned my black floor panels and bought the wolfs burg west grey ones.
