If the balls are running that close to the edge there is something wrong.. like the driveshafts are too short. Coming off an auto box or some other Porsche or VW ? The groove in the outer housing is an indication of which way round they should ideally go, but the insides are machined symmetrically ..
I think but can't be sure that if a CV is assembled incorrectly it won't slide at all so it's more a case of 1-2mm play (bound to move a bit) or lots of easy sliding action.
I checked the lateral play on the o/s driveshaft, the one still on the bus with JK CV joints, and it's at least 20mm with the bus on stands and the wheels dangling. I know I'm going to end up changing these as I've had one fail so I don't tryst them. Maybe next month. I've built up the n/s shaft ready to put on. Two new GKN CV joints, locked, loaded and greased. Most importantly they're both definitely assembled and orientated correctly on the shaft and clocked too. Waiting for a new torque wrench then I'll fit it
And that's the end of that saga, although I will be doing the other side to bring it up to the same standard.
