Something is making a permanent earth connection off the steering column

The new coupling is possibly conductive; steel reinforcing perhaps.

I had the same with a coupling I bought and had to get another from Heritage.

  6. Is it the Lares 209 coupler? If so it’s non conductive, I tested that before fitting mine.

Daft question, did remove the blue link wire? Didn’t really see the point of that. If you did remove that, then perhaps you have the outer and inner column shorting somewhere?

    Hope you get it sorted

  7. In later Bays, you need the link wire to earth across from the inner column to the steering box/chassis.

same comment as above from me… my 74 bus didn’t need the blue link wire included with the Lares…

Yep. Our earlier buses need the coupler to insulate - the wire down the column passes through it to attach on the box side. The outer column is the other path oop the column. Not that mine works, I gave up and fitted a switch on the dash.

  11. They did rejig the horn arrangements on later busses, so you don't need the bottom insulator

You wonder why it took them so long to figure out a better way.

  13. The Early setup was a bit barmy. Kick the steering column or thump the wheel, and the horn goes off when you go round corners. Classic design

But if you try to hotwire it with the steering lock on , the horn goes off as it is grounded by the locking pin ... which may have been a serendipitous but dubious "safety/security feature"

  15. Never thought of that. Free car alarm!
