Looking for ideas folks from building and DIYing types:theforce:. Just had John Lewis in to lay a L.V.T. type floor in a herringbone pattern on the kitchen floor and it looks fab fab fab. Now here’s the issue:thinking:.The previous floor and the one prior to that were click lock floors on some serious underlay, maybe even ten mil, so with the flooring out and the underlay out, even with a bit of latexing, there’s a serious gap to the herringbone L.V.T. This is primarily due to me fitting the skirts on top of the click lock. :gnome:So I’ve now got a gap of up to fifteen mil in places . Been up to Buggered and Quarrelsome :hattip:and the best I could find was pre primed MDF architrave. It’s exactly what I want in terms of shape :thumbsup:but it just looks toooooo thick and is near enough to a cover bead as to look not too spesh. I’ve thought of various techniques but am a bit stumped for sourcing. It’s too big to do a sealant/ mastic job :burp:and I’m not a fan of quadrant or scotia :eek:but I’m looking for something in wood between perhaps forty mill up to a max of 75 mill in height but much thinner maybe five mil thick with a bullnose on. This is so that once painted it’ll appear to be a built up skirting and when finished wont look like a lump tacked on. Also im thinking that the top line of the added piece will spread any unevenness and lose it before the wiggles / moulding of the 125 mil Taurus there right now. So I’m looking for where to get something in Bristol and what it might be called or a different approach that doesn’t involve sealant or removing and replacing with larger skirtings which is obviously the number one approach apart from the mess.:);) :)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,all ideas treated in confidence and don’t forget I’ll be on my knees doing it :hattip:

I'm sure in the past I've managed to find some wood trim in B&Q that's about 40mm x 5mm x 3m. The sort of stuff to build up an internal door frame. It had square edges, but I'm sure you could route it with a roundover bit

Have a look in the rack of moulding and quadrant in your local DIY megastore

  3. It's a big gap , silicone will look wrong and messy , I would whip off the skirting and replace

Thats exactly what I was thinking but the mouldings were non existent in Bothered and Quirky and Wickes faired even less so. I’ve just seen a D moulding in Travis Perkins on line but it’s 6 mill by 18mill, and not sure if that’s gonna be tooo small, big enough to cover the gap admittedly but might be a devil to fix securely as it’s only just bigger than the gap in places by a few mill. Possibly glue some grounds in the gap first with some gap filler / adhesive type stuff but might need to be a bit biggererer to get a nail or a Brad in there. I’ll keep trawling as I now have one that I think might be tooo big and clumpy and possibly one that’s too small / delicate. A couple of wacks with the vacuum might knacker the littler one.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,, am I over thinking this,,,,,, AGAIN:);):)

What's your existing skirting like apart from not meeting the floor? Tall? Short? Plain? Fancy?

Yes yes and yes. With hindsight, I should’ve whipped the skirtings off prior to Mr John Lewis laying my new floor, then fitted new 175 Taurus to cover the gap and where the old skirtings came off. That would’ve been the ‘real’ solution. But I’ve got a freshly laid new floor, and a freshly decorated lounge with new furniture in the walk through right next to it and I’m trying my hardest to minimise the mess. Also to minimise my time on my knees as a bonus even with good knee pads

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, hoping for inspiration :)

Hi bud, at the moment I’ve got 125 mill mdf Taurus skirtings painted white. The skirtings and the old flooring had only been down a matter of months, six months ago maybe ? We then had a washing machine wet itself all over the click lock flooring several months back and it’s taken this long to get it sorted out. Hence the new this that and the other. It all managed to coincide with the arrival of my new lounge furniture which looks ace in a teal colour on my lounge bamboo floor. Still haven’t sorted everything out in the lounge yet, but I’ll sort this first. Just sometimes all this stuff happens one thing after another after another after another. Feel like I’m getting bogged down with it all when I really just wanna go and play in my van on my day off. :);):) But I’ll sort it this morning. :)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, Travis Perkins is looking fave at the mo.:cool::cool:

Best job would be to replace but you’ve squished that idea. Does it have to be wood? How about UPVC profiling from e.g GAP ( very apt) or other window suppliers. It’s about 4- 6 mm thick and all sorts of widths, square/chamfered or bullnose. I can also be painted and easy to stick on.

B@q normally have a stand with trims in it Dowling and various shaped wood pieces normally 2m in length, it's near the wood isle on an end the wood lays flat and not standing up , ask for Dowling it will be in the same rack, i hope that makes sense

Ive had this very thought, in that upvc seems to be available in loads of thin sizes . The reason I’d like wood or timber or even mdf is that I want to undercoat and gloss along with the existing to make it look ‘ all as one ‘ for want of a better term, praps mdf this thin would bruise easily too with Mr Henry the vac clumping about in there. So thin ‘ pine ‘ starting to sound the job.:)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,where’s that bloody Geordie when he’s needed :theforce:

That’s what I’m looking for,,,,,,Inspiration,, 3mm ply,,, sounds like lots of work though. However, becauseI’m trying to get this job ticked off the list, I’d still be on this in my next day off ,,,,

No problem undercoating and painting it. I’ve had a threshold strip in situ and painted for 4 years with no peeling.

Build a new internal wall to cover the gap. You might get an insulation grant to help too

    Am I helping?

    YES!!
That was exactly what I was looking for but there weren’t none <<< good English :D. At one time, there was an abundance of mouldings in hardwood and softwood in the flat out rack for the 2m lengths and a box like bunch of umbrella stands for the 1200 and less. I never ever bought any, but marvelled over anyone paying a zillion quid for a metre of moulding  Now I’m that sucker looking for it :D The young ish staff didn’t really understand what I was asking for and i surrendered before being shown to the roofing batten againo_O

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,great minds etc etc :)

Rather than a diy shop is there a timber merchant near by, normally cheaper and more helpful,

Absolutely spot on. All my years in the game telling people to go to the real places instead of the DIY outlets and here I am in a quandary because I opted for convenience. The local Travis Perkins was formerly Malden Timber and as far as I know is still the favoured timber merchant locally as it kept its custom and favoured the timber supply business.:)

I use the stuff window fitters use to hide the mess between upvc window and old plaster.
Think it's called " cloak " comes as slim as 25mm with a nice curved top.
    Only issue...comes in 5m lengths...but it's only a couple of quid a length.
    Eurocell or similar stock it.
