Any recommendations for paint to go on the rear drum brakes? Assuming I need some VHT paint?

  7. Tractor enamel or hammerite smooth does the job
Works on callipers and discs aswell
Obviously not all of the disc gets painted

Cheers. Sounds like they don’t get hot enough for me to have to worry about paint issues. I’m getting a stack of bits back from the blasters this week so I’ll just paint them as part of that batch.

Para I see you painted the middle black, is that purely aesthetic or is that what Si was talking about leaving bare?

  9. The tractor enamel is quite thick so I didn’t want to do the mating face with it.
There’s a chances it could soften and release the pressure the wheel nuts have on the wheel against the drum.
The centre just got a light mist of black rattle can enamel to tidy it up.

If your brake adjusters are too tight or you go down a long hill with brakes on they will get pretty hot.

Generally though, not hot enough to even need VHT but the paint will eventually get burnt off.

  11. Just boggo brake paint from Halfords should do. It'll likely come off again over time. Problem with VHT is that it needs heat to cure, which the drums likely won't provide.

So you need to stink out the oven to bake VHT

  15. Thread reboot…if that’s a thing!

Looking to refresh my rear brake drums.
I have calliper paint (OTT it seems but never mind - doesn’t need baking on).
From what’s been said already, just the one coat of paint on the flat front surface.

Main line of query is about rust removal and treatment.

The sides are a bit rusty and bumpy. How nuts should I go sanding them?
I was thinking to use Bilt-Hamber pre-painting but no info on its temperature tolerance. It seems to be like an etch primer and since you guys say normal paint is fine, I imagine the rust treatment will be too.

On the inside it is slightly rusted in the centre.
Is it ok to sand that off and paint it one coat?

    Thanks all.

  16. The outside will be bumpy anyway, as it's a casting. Slap some rust stabiliser on it, and just use whatever black paint takes your fancy. Don't paint the inner surface. It needs to be flat.

PS Give the brake shoe surfaces a light sanding. Are they scored?

  17. Sorry for delayed reply…photos won’t upload.
You’ve given me something to get on with though.
    Thanks.

By “brake shoe surface” do you mean:
-The metal brackets holding the pads
    -Pads themselves
    or
-The surface inside the drums that contacts the pads

    Finding different definitions for things.
Nothing looks scored to me but one pad is degraded (possibly because they were installed incorrectly ).

  18. I mean the surfaces inside the drum that the shoes contact. They shouldn’t have rust or crud on them.
