Dynamo bearing

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by andybay, Jul 2, 2022.

  1. Can the bearings in the dynamo be changed or is it time for a new dynamo?

I took my engine out to change the inlet manifold as the previous owner cut off the heat riser tubes to the manifold which I think is causing stuttering and carb icing. While the engine was out I noticed a bit of play in the dynamo/fan shaft.

  2. How do I upload a video?

If it still has a dynamo, I’d consider an alternator upgrade.

Upload the video to YouTube and post the link.

  4. Dynamo should have standard bearings, if you can read the numbers off them.

But as Westy says, good opportunity to upgrade to an alternator.

If you have an aftermarket exhaust dont forget to make sure there are holes between the heat riser pipes and the exhaust. They are always delivered with no holes so they dont need block off plates with dual carbs e.g.

If you cant find the numbers on the bearings, measure the outer and inner diameter and bearing width.
Go to e.g. bearingboys.co.uk or simplybearings.co.uk and search for those dimensions , shielded SKF bearings. You may also need a bearing puller kit off eBay or Amazon..

  6. Dynamo bearings replaced, inlet manifold with heat risers fitted and engine back in. It runs great, better than it ever has, no longer stalls at every junction and no hesitation or misfiring.
The bearings are fairly straightforward to replace if you have a bearing puller or press. The bearings are 6202-2rs bearings for anyone that is considering doing the job. Only about 3 quid each so much cheaper than a new dynamo
