Engine Build: Best thing I can do with complete Type 4 1.8

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Spacecowboyuk, Aug 6, 2020.

  1. As title really. Suggestions on the best thing I can do with a currently stock Type 4, complete 1.8 engine. The way I see it my options are (not so much option 3 but interested to know what optimal looks like):
    1. Freshen up and leave as is?
    2. Best spec for a budget build (more CC etc)?
    3. If money was no object spec?

The more cc you add the more of it you will throw away.
At the extreme end a 2.3-2.4l stroker. You would reuse the case and pushrods. 4.5-5k for parts alone, I've just been pricing it up.

If you know the bottom end is in good order, go bigger pistons / barrels and make it a 1911cc which is a nice motor to drive.

What cylinder heads do you have? The 1800's had 41mm / 34mm heads, which will have part number 021 - 101 - 371S cast in them.

Decent carbs will see it off a treat.

Our's was rolling road tuned at 96 bhp at the flywheel five years ago!

  4. I'll check part numbers on the heads

At the other end fit new rings and hone the barrels, lap the valves and reassemble with no other new parts.

Mork's suggestion is popular because it's cheap and cheerful. You don't need big valve heads, it might be more bus suited with the smaller ones at that cc.

  6. Personally i`d just fit and run it , if it breaks then`s the time to think about options .

    #strokeenvy :D

If the big valve heads are there and are good, make use of them anyway?

Agreed unless it's a spare engine in which case I'd completely strip and inspect before making any choices. Say the crank is u/s ... suddely the world is your lobster.

Certainly. Just saying it's really neither here nor there in the bigger picture for a bus engine. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Quite funny really. A 1600 type 1 (69mm) is a stroker compared to an 1800 type 4 (66mm). Get yourelf a lawn mower engine. :D

Some of the "lawnmower" engine had a bloody good spec to them and put out some awesome performances. Harmful on the wallet mind!

  12. It`s a chance with any used engine i suppose but worth a look before fitting wouldn`t do any harm ...

The other option is to spunk up and play The Engine Shoppe lottery , at least for a few grand you get some kind of warranty .

If it makes 50 miles it'll make it through a 10,000 mile warranty I think. Any engine.

  14. I'd also go with 1911 as the most economical upgrade, it's a big Bus, after all. If you want a sports car performance, don't buy a Bus ;)

  15. It's a spare engine

What engine is in your bus?

  17. 2.0 type 4. This is a spare type 4 I want to do something with e.g. put it in my 67 Beetle or, if I ever get round to it, building a 356 replica.

A car engine and a bus engine are two different things.

  19. Agreed

  20. If it's going in a car.. if go and have a read of few threads on The Type 4rum over at Shoptalkforums, most of theirs seem to go in cars... but I'd guess you're starting off with a cam change.. once you've found out what you have...
