First outing for the dutch oven

  1. We finally used our Christmas present for the first time today. We went in the car to Tatton Park, stoked up the barbie and cooked shrimp and spring onion fritters for starters followed by quesadilla.
It was a cold day at 3 degrees, too cold to actually sit, but wrapped up warm, we had a brilliant day out.
We have a dutch oven cook book but to be honest the recipes are a little weird, catering to American tastes. We just adapted easy quick recipes this time as we needed to season the cast iron pans. Can't wait to cook bread and jacket potatoes and hearty stews!

Anyone have dutch oven recipes they have tried, then please post on here so we can try 'em too :)

    Shrimp and spring onion fritters.

175g Potted shrimps, sliced spring onions, batter: 175g plain flour, pinch of bicarbonate of soda, water, salt and pepper and mix to a smooth thick batter. Deep fry until golden.

    Quesadilla
Onion, peppers, ham/quorn pieces/cooked chicken. Fry in pan. Heat the tortilla on a griddle pan then add the fried mixture and top with grated cheese and hot chilli sauce. Add another tortilla on top, turn over once the cheese has melted inside, then cook on this side for an equal amount of time.

nice post, memories of when tatton was a bit fuller only a month or two ago!

  3. I like the flask in the chair instead of a beer... >:D

    Nice stove... O0

  4. We used ours for the first time over Xmas but in the fireplace as opposed to outside.

We're going to play with it at Winter Camp - need to work out what we can use to put under the oven to stop the grass burning...

We made a stew - very tasty (can't remember the recipie)

  5. Can I ask,
Did you experiment further with these or did they turn out to be too much trouble?
To set up & cook with?
    To clean up afterwards?
& did they take up a Marmite load of space in the van?

as is the law when i see a thread like this......... ( dutch oven) *snigger*

  9. You can cook with a dutch oven over/on/near a bbq, it's the heat from the charcoal you're after, you put coals underneath and some on top of the lid. A fire pit would be better and as soon as summer rears it's ugly head we'll let you know how we get on!

  10. We got a lot of use out of ours our last camping trip. Baking, pot roasts and chilli con carne.

  11. Sorry, if I am being thick 8)
BUT, could you not use a "Galvanised Bucket " instead ::)

  12. I think stuff would burn and you wouldn't get the oven effect that you get with these

You could always give it a go and report back

  13. I've got one just like the Wilma's one by the look of the photo and carry it in the bus as my big saucepan. So far I have only used it on the cooker top to do curries, stews and the like and its lovely to cook with as it transfers heat evenly. I haven't tried it on a fire or BBQ yet or to do bread. Sounds like fun though.

  14. A Dutch oven is usually made of cast iron or aluminium, they have no coating on the inside and the gauge of the metal and the construction means they retain heat. That heat is direct from a fire or stove bt most Dutch ovens have little legs to create a space underneath and the heat comes from charcoal or wood embers underneath and on top on the recessed lid. Hopefully we'll be cooking with it this weekend :)

  15. This thread has given me the push to look into prices, so I start by googling 'dutch oven'.....................and I'm offered The Urban Dictionary's definition..................uuurrgh!!!
