Fixed one oil leak from oil cooler. Now I think it's leaking from the main seal

  1. So I was finally able to take the van out on a long trip 140 miles each way. After a bumpy start lots of back firing and not starting in a Lidl car park after getting supply's, turned out to just been a loose condenser. After that drove beautifully the whole way parked up at the campsite to find my whole bumper covered in oil.

I topped the oil up to the top line before driving back checked it again once home and it was just under the bottom line after the 140 miles.

I suspect it is the front seal, as the fan was spraying it everywhere but not 100%

I am based in devizes Wiltshire. But I am happy to drive most places for a quick and not over priced garage of anyone has any recommendations. ☺️

Was it you posted a pic with lots of oil on RHS of your bumper?
If it was and it's a type-4 check your dip stick boot.

Ah-ha, this is bang on the dip stick boot. Flywheel seal would be evenly splattered right up the back of your bus. Or did you leave the oil filler cap off?

  4. I read another post and think you could be right, it's annoying because it was a brand new boot so I was hesitant to suspect that.

I will have a check tomorrow in the light

  5. It was, but honestly it drove so well thanks to all your advice, ment so much to me I was driving it thinking everyone on here made it happen.

I also now understand what you mean by lacking power haha. 1st and 2nd great off the line then the power is gone compared to the 2l. Really doesn't like hills but I am just happy driving it

Those 1700's with the correct box go really well between 40 and 60mph in third. With your 6 rib that's probably going to be 45 mph+ but still not as pokey due to the gearing which is going to steal 10% of your HP. Doesn't sound like much I know but it is noticeable.
I hope you find time to patiently fix your 2L, it would be worth it as you already have the "sought after" box for it!

  7. I want to keep the gearbox because eventually want to turn it electric.

Just went to have a look at the boot, it was all intact and relatively "dry" . I've bought a oil filler blanking plate because this engine has a top dipstick as well. Because it might be from then filler neck but not 100%

I have added a photo of the amount of oil looking down from the top hatch

  8. That could be from a few places , you need to run it and see where its coming from ... could be the oil pressure sender spaying it .....
Your dizzy looks in the wrong orientation ? your missing spark plug to tinware boots ! whats the engine number? if it has dipstick on top it could be a 914 engine case
on a positive note ...its not going to go rusty ..

  9. The oil pressure sender could be a good place to start. Just remembered I didn't install it with a crush washer.

  10. They don't have a crush washer - it's a taper fit . If you've screwed it all the way in you've probably cracked the case ....

    I'm hoping not .

Edit - just realised it's NOT a 1600 , dunno if the T4 has crush washer or taper fit ??

    @Zed ??

Type 4 is taper fit, same as a Type 1 and has the same switch.

  13. yep I’ve two . ( and a 1800) it was a 1700 that I chose to SC due to fact they have best case and are the best sealing type 4

The originals were a collaboration with Porsche, weren’t they?
Thought I read it somewhere, but they shift with the original twin solex carbs on,I know that much.mine was good for 80, all day long, after I did a top end rebuild, new rings, etc.

  16. Believe the "cheap" 914 had a VW engine in it. The proper Porsche one had a different engine, with lots of chains in it. Might be wrong.

  17. All 4 cylinder 914 models had a Type 4 engine in 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 variants depending on the year. The 914/6 had a 2.0 Porsche flat 6 but that only lasted a few years and was upgraded:))) to a 2.0 Type 4 engine.

  18. Type4 engine I believe was developed for the 411/412 cars and used in the 1970 914 and the 2litre was originally destined for the 1973 914 and 912 then with tweaks fitted to busses

  19. yes originally “cheap” but now they go much dollar especially a clone 6

  20. Finally got round to trying to fix the oil leak. Do you think the leak could come from the dent in the cooler?
