Fixed one oil leak from oil cooler. Now I think it's leaking from the main seal

Crankcase pressure pushing oil out of the dipstick tube?

  2. Is that a bad thing?

Yes. With the engine running remove the oil filler cap - any smoke/fumes?

  4. No smoke or fumes but lots of oil being chuck out without the cap on.

I put a cap over the oil breather that use to go into the fi would that be an issue. The photo is before I put the end on

    You've blocked your breather!

Don’t cap the breather, that will pressurise the crankcase, connect it to one of the air filters.

VW didn't vent the case for a laugh!

  8. ..... I didn't think I needed it because I went to carbs. It use to have a hose. I'm guessing I have done something very wrong :'(

    But fortunately not irreversible

  10. Could this also be the reason I had such problems with the oil cooler leaking

Yep. Unvented pressure in the case will blow out of the seals. Glad you diagnosed the issue.
They were probably tired anyway, so one thing you don't have to worry about now

The engine has to breathe and with the breather box blocked it has to find somewhere else to vent – like the dipstick.

Where do you have the fuel tank breather connected? It should go to the other air filter.

No, crankcase pressure has nothing to do with oil pressure. If the cooler seals were leaking it wasn’t because you blocked off the breather.

  14. I've never touched or looked at the fuel breathers I just know that go around the top of my engine bay?

They go from each side of the engine bay into a ‘T’ then into the air filter. FI was different but now you have changed to carbs the engine breather should go to one air filter and the fuel tank breather into the other.

Crankcase pressure might blow out the crank seals but it can’t blow the cooler seals. The leaking cooler seals is another unsolved mystery.

That's why I stick to gearboxes normally..but don't mess with stock if I can help it:D

  18. Just took it out for a spin the the oil breather unblocked just parked up only 3 drips of oil where as before it was lot and lots. Fingers crossed this has fixed it, also felt like it had more power.

There was definitely a hole in the oil cooler when I changed it I probably didn't tighten it enough and maybe the slightly higher oil pressure made it leak. But what do I know.

Just want to say a big thank you to everyone one

You might want to change the thread title, you definitely do not want to buy oil cooler seals with one side domed.
