How does your seat attach

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Leer32, Apr 26, 2014.

  1. I've just received new seat runners for my 74 tin top as I couldn't put the seat in as it had different runners to the main body part of my bus.
The new runner fit fine with the chair but on closer inspection the chair is about 1" to narrow meaning that one side of the runners will not reach over the gap correctly leaving in handing.
Is the best way to just get a complete board attach it to the body then the seat to the board ? Or is there another way

How does your seat fit ? The seat is a single drivers seat and a twin passenger

  2. Not sure I really understand what the prob is. The runners should be welded to the wheel arch.

  3. Yeah that's right but the seat I have is newer than my van and is to narrow and doesn't meet across to the second weld point so the seat runner carnt be fully welded on both sides
Normal points for chair to connect

But to wide for chair and carnt move them in as this part of the van dips down to much

  4. Does anyone have pictures of under there seats ?

  5. It's sounds obvious but you need the correct seats then or seats wide enough to fit. I'm guessing it's another manufacturers drivers seat you're trying to install? If so you'll be hard pushed to find anything that will fit into stock VW bus runners.

If it's not a VW seat then you'll have to adapt.

I have Porsche toombstones, when I got the van both the inner original VW runners (that are welded to the wheel arch near the walk through) were missing - I cut the outer ones out in the end as they were in the way.

The inner part, near the walk through marries up to the inner runner on the new seat, and MOST importantly centres the seat to the steering wheel (if your's doesn't then you need to make adaptors - a non centred seat is a nightmare), so these were a simple drill new holes job.

The outer part was as with yours, too narrow. I made some adaptors out of plastic and cut to fit (around 1cm high) and packed these under the Porsche runners. To take the seats out, I unbolt the runner from the wheel arch, it comes out with the seat leaving just holes and plastic adaptors in the van.

Again, when I got the van, it had Ford Fiesta Turbo seats in it - these had their runner bolted to two pieces of rebarr that had been welded across each arch - it looked crap and worked as crap.

  7. @Leer32 eh mate where did you get those runners from cos they are the exact ones that i need for the seats i bought off of birdy today. what i would do is get sheet of metal that will goes across the gap between the two sides weld it and then weld the runners to that.

    Birdy likes this.

Your seats look like late seats and they are early runners

  9. The runners pal come from just kampers they only do 74+ that fit my seat but just not my van

  10. Yeah David they are that why I couldn't marry them up just need some kind of adapter to fit them

  11. The seats guys are Vw seats just late 74+ I wasn't aware that Vw changed the runners and seems like the width too before I brought them

I think you are getting confused, the seat runners JK sell are to weld to the van, to fit them you would remove your runners completely and replace them with the ones from JK. Do you still have your old seats ?

  13. I never had seats it's a a full restoration was brought just as a shell. The just kamper runners def bolt on I spoke with them before I brought them then have two holes for the bolts one either end

  14. Sorry gents bit of confusion the picture is what I had in my van the runners I brought and can only get hold of are
[IMG] from just kampers that fit the seat

They may bolt on, but when vw built. Vans they welded the runners into the van, the ones at jk are to go on the van, a combination of that part and your seat makes the seat move, you need to remove the welded in runners from your van and replace them with the jk ones and position them to suit your seats

  16. Yeah David only problem is if I wield the new runners in the exact position of the old they won't fit the seat (please see photo) [IMG][IMG]

This is what it looks like if I have lined the inner runner on top of the Old runner wield/holes the outer runner is about 1" to short because the way the chair is

Yes I know they are different, that's why I suggested fitting them in a position that suits your needs/ seat , someone of the forum needs your seat runners, perhaps a swap could be done, have the runners on your van been cut,

  18. Yeah had to cut then. Fitting the runners I get it's just what would be best to make up the 1" or so difference that puts the seat to short to get ontop the wheel arch ?
