I don’t think it should be compulsory. it’s a big old institutional organisation that’s lost its professionalism.

I find the main news is poor with a lack of facts and just goes for the emotive angle. I also hate how they pick a story for the week and do it to death then you never hear of it again, although the local news is good.

The other free channels itv 4,5 and sky news have news and lots of good programs and I find myself watching them more.

If you compare to other none free suppliers like Netflix/Amazon it’s much more expensive.

Just listening to In Our Time on BBC Sounds, great stuff, about the Battle of Trafalgar. No doubt it gets no where near the listening figures some of the Beeb’s high profile progs get but it’s just as important. Mustn’t forget the wonderful Bite Size which is a fantastic resource for any parents helping the kids with their homework.

  4. I don’t want the bbc abolished. I think that would be a terrible idea. But like all organisations, if not kept in check and modernised they become bloated and mired in self interest and often end up being run by a self appointed ‘faction’. If you look around at every other media/entertainment, the license fee is a unique system. You’d all be up in arms if the government said it was releasing a national newspaper and you will be legally required to pay say £5 a month for it.

I actually think considering it’s meant to be for the people, the bbc does quite poorly with non mainstream tv shows. Tens of thousands of people like for example outdoor type pursuits, surfing, wind surfing, fell running, etc etc. Tens of thousands take part in moto x and track days and banger racing etc. Why can’t they produce just a half hour show for a few of these hobbies. Stick it on bbc4. Do stuff for the people. A decent car restoration show would be great. So would a joy of painting type show. Model making, Lego, model railways, etc etc. People would really enjoy it. It’s a public funded service so it shouldn’t be ratings based. It should have something for everyone. But it’s all too cosy. Take Dan Walker as an example.first he’s on five live. He’s on breakfast tv, then he’s doing the football, then he pops up on strictly. It’s just the same old sausage factory stuff.

it needs a shake up. It’s about time they started doing stuff that people want, instead of desperately trying to be on trend all the time. The biggest participation hobby in this country is angling. Yet the national broadcaster can’t find even half an hour once a week on any of its channels for a proper angling show.

  5. And I haven’t even started with BritBox yet. The BBC makes programmes with our licence money, then puts them on britbox and demands a subscription to watch the stuff you’ve already paid. They really are taking the pee with that one.

  6. What about a guitar show? I’m as musical as a brick. But i see hundreds of guitars in my customers houses, so it must be a popular pastime. Half a dozen half hour shows, have a segment with a famous musician, a bit on new technology, a how to section, tour a few factories, go and see people’s mental 300 guitar collection etc etc. Make stuff for everyone.

A lot of that unfortunately IMO is the BBC simply spreading what they already did into pieces and padding each one out with pap. So really, you get the same, a load of carp padding it out and it costs them 10x as much to do. Then we had the radio 6 debacle when they decided it wasn't mainstream enough (too intelligent) tried to ditch it, bought it back and turned it into radio 1. Then what - put the same stuff on line because they HAD TO. That picture makes it look like we get more now but it's a con. Not that I watch TV, and that's partly the reason - it got too difficult to weed out the carp.

Ok, I will agree with this. How does one go about submitting a program idea?

Actually, I have changed my mind. That would probably cause every Tom dick and harry to go out and buy guitars, then the prices would go up, etc etc

How about a program about DIY Plumbing?

  10. I’ve got no idea. I’ve had this idea called Confessions of a Nazi Heating Engineer for ages. Hawked it round a few channels but I dunno why but I just keep getting rejections.

  12. Apparently I’m too right wing. Bloody GB snowflakes. I thought they were meant to be for the people. I wore my best SS Uniform to that meetings as well. Wasted the bloody money on getting dry cleaned and everything.

The trouble with the tv licence is that it costs exactly same for a billionaire as it does for an unemployed single parent. Surely it would be better to fund it from general taxation than individual subscriptions. If it's a national treasure, it should be free like the National Gallery etc.
