The old ones were a bit crispy Matt and had been previously repaired. I'll probably get them done up as a spare set at some stage

    So the journey continues.
We've got him back at last:D
We're having a week shake down in the Highlands, then our work starts with the interior refit.
So far so good, and the first day is under our belts. With the promise of a lovely week of weather ahead, I'm starting to relax into the noises of the turbo, straight cut 4th and mud terrains...

Cheers Matt. I'm delighted the with the way it's coming together.

I got the bumpers made in Poland which was a deep breath moment coz they're our design.
Really good value, delivered by a scary 6ft 4 Polish chap at 01.30 am. He'd done a red eye in a transit packed with all sorts of stuff going goodness knows where!

I made the rear window blanks out of marine aluminium, again stoked with the look.

Mrs Monkey wanted the arch trims and as she negotiates me through my financial maze how could I refuse...

  10. bumpers look great - perfect for both desert bashing and close quarters parking in da city (having had another end cap modified today….). The aftermarket HD bumpers are a fair old wedge of cash - respect to you for getting yours made.

Looking forward to seeing the interior build.

That's the DBs that. I might even change my mind about T3s or is it T25? Love the stance. Gearbox any good?

The gearing is spot on. Phew..
It's pleasing that in real life I'm getting exactly what hours of head scratching and scribblings predicted.
Really, really happy with the calculations regarding final drive and wheel size, the regearing of 3rd and 4th Vs the power delivery of the TDI.
Straight cut 4th is interesting. I've driven my mate Paul's, who runs Vantopia in Ireland, who fitted a coarser cut 4th on his around the same time as I built out box so I knew sort of what to expect. Ours being finer toothed is a bit quieter, but still intrusive.

The van is a bare shell so I'm reserving judgement until it's fitted out and properly soundproofed.
Now, we actually love it in a bizarre way as it whirrs away to engine revs. It's what I imagine it's like inside Bernd Yagers yellow rally bus lol.
The temptation is there to constantly floor it in 4th but I'm resisting as it's only got a couple of hundred miles on.

Been super busy since we got back so this afternoon I decided to invest a coupe of hours.

The reason for the ally rear window blanks is 2 fold. We will have cupboards either side of our fixed double bed, so I can now insulate properly in the cavity behind.

Also, in the base of each cabinet will be a 38litre water tank. If I've got my workings right these tanks will fill and empty together, keeping the weight even. So the second reason for replacing glass with metal is so I can mount fill points.
Bloody big hole, one either side IMG_20220408_162506_compress41.jpg

Semaphore, just like in the olden days...
    IMG_20220408_161522_compress89.jpg

Untidy, but this mocks up the tanks Vs fill point angle. I've had to mount the points with the writing at a jaunty angle..but I think they work oko_O

Finished just as the rain came down. Pleased with the results...
